Primary Purpose

Corporal – Detective/Investigator is assigned to investigate and manage criminal and other cases occurring within the jurisdiction of South San ISD.

Qualifications
  • Education/Certification:
    • Texas Peace Officer license issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE)
    • Peace Officer Certification (minimum Intermediate Certification preferred) required.
    • Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by the employee.

Major Responsibilities and Duties
  • This position assists the field officer via follow-up on the initial police report gathering evidence and other investigative details in order to establish and prepare a criminal case that is sufficient to be sent to the appropriate court for prosecution.
  • In non-criminal cases, the detective/investigator may act as the person responsible in gathering facts, witness statement and other evidence to answer the question (in a non-judgmental way), “What happened?”. The result is provided to the requestor for his/her final adjudication. Occasionally, recommendations are included in the final report to assist in the decision-making process.
  • Detective/investigator may be asked to serve as Internal Affairs investigator in cases involving alleged misconduct by a police officer under the direction of the police chief or his designee.
  • Supervise and/or conduct investigation of criminal cases that occur within the jurisdiction of the district or support other agencies conducting such investigation.
  • Monitor the daily enforcement operations of the district police department to assure they are in compliance with procedures, policy and current law. Discrepancies are reported to the Chief of Police or his designee.
  • Work cooperatively with other staff to develop and implement proactive activities to reduce crime and fear of crime in the district.
  • Serve as resource officer in the handling or application of the correct penal code violation in a given criminal case.
  • Prepare investigative report packages supporting the required filing documents for filing a case with the appropriate court.
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned by the Chief of Police or his designee.
Provide Support Services for the Department
  • Organize and maintain police department General Manual of Operations up to date.
  • Assist supervision to conduct Report Review activities to insure compliance with policy, rules and completeness of reports; confirming proper identification of witnesses and suspects and making sure the elements of the offense for the offense charged are supported in the details of the report.
  • Create and maintain a monthly log of all investigative unit activity and provide a written report to the Chief each month.
  • Assist staff with training and direction for officers and department civilian personnel.
  • Make calls and assist officers as needed.
  • Other related activities as may be required by the Chief of Police.
