Job Description
CSS is partnering with a local utilities organization in San Antonio, Texas, to identify qualified candidates for a six-month Temporary Utility Technician assignment supporting wastewater treatment plant operations, industrial maintenance, and facility cleaning activities. This hands-on position is ideal for candidates with experience in wastewater operations, industrial maintenance, mechanical repairs, equipment installation, manufacturing, construction, or general utility operations.
Position SummaryThe Utility Technician will perform physically demanding cleaning, maintenance, mechanical support, and operational duties within an active wastewater treatment facility.
Responsibilities include confined space work, pressure washing, sludge and debris removal, algae cleaning, equipment maintenance, spill response, and general facility upkeep.
Candidates with experience maintaining conveyor systems, motors, pumps, gearboxes, bearings, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, or other industrial equipment may bring valuable transferable skills to this role.
Technicians must be comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions, including extreme summer heat, and following established OSHA safety standards and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures.
Due to seasonal heat and algae bloom conditions, a significant portion of the work during summer months may involve weir and tank cleaning.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities Wastewater Treatment and Facility Maintenance- Clean weirs and remove debris from first- and second-stage final tanks.
- Scrub algae from tank walls, remove weeds, and pressure wash treatment areas.
- Clean clarifier tanks, including sludge and debris removal when tanks are drained.
- Perform cleaning and maintenance of aeration basins, settling tanks, and final tanks.
- Remove sludge and debris accumulation from tank bottoms and draft tubes.
- Install stop logs and operate trash pumps to drain MLSS channels for cleaning.
- Respond to sludge spills and assist with cleanup operations.
- Maintain clean, safe, and organized work areas throughout the facility.
- Assist with preventive and corrective maintenance of pumps, motors, conveyors, and other industrial equipment.
- Identify mechanical issues and assist with troubleshooting and basic repairs.
- Work with mechanical components such as bearings, chains, sprockets, gearboxes, and related equipment.
- Assist with equipment installation, alignment, maintenance, and repair activities as assigned.
- Support hydraulic and pneumatic equipment maintenance and perform basic electrical troubleshooting within the scope of training and authorization.
- Operate and assist with maintenance of pressure washers, pumps, and other industrial equipment.
- Safely handle tools, materials, and equipment used in facility maintenance and operations.
- Operate equipment such as forklifts, lifts, cranes, and other material-handling equipment when qualified and authorized.
- Follow OSHA safety standards and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures.
- Perform assigned duties in confined spaces in accordance with facility safety requirements and applicable procedures.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow established safety protocols.
- Assist with maintaining compliance with facility safety and operational procedures.
- Previous experience in wastewater operations, industrial maintenance, manufacturing, utilities, construction, mechanical installation, or industrial cleaning preferred.
- Experience with pumps, motors, conveyors, mechanical systems, or industrial equipment is a plus.
- Familiarity with preventive maintenance, mechanical troubleshooting, and basic equipment repairs preferred.
- Knowledge of OSHA safety practices and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures is beneficial.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification is a plus.
- Experience operating forklifts, cranes, boom lifts, scissor lifts, or other industrial equipment is desirable.
- Wastewater operator licenses or related technical certifications are a plus.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical labor, including lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling equipment and materials.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and around wastewater treatment systems while following required safety procedures.
- Comfortable working outdoors in extreme temperatures and physically demanding industrial environments.
- Strong attendance, reliability, teamwork, and a willingness to learn are essential.
