Position Summary

The Military and Veteran Services Specialist & School Certifying Official serves as a primary point of contact for military-affiliated students at UIW , providing exceptional customer service and administering U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Department of Defense (DoD) Tuition Assistance, and other educational benefits. The Military and Veteran Services Specialist & School Certifying Official reports to the Assistant Director of the Military & Veteran Center.

This is an on-main-campus position, not eligible for remote work.

Description of Job Duties

  • Processes requests for certification under Veterans Affairs, Department of Defense (DoD), and Tuition Assistance educational benefits and posts resources to student accounts in accordance with applicable regulations and institutional procedures.
  • Processes a high volume of data from various sources (Banner and Enrollment Manager) and analyzes and anticipates complex issues. Maintains accurate records.
  • Serves as a liaison between military-affiliated students and university services, including Financial Assistance, Academic Advising, Business Office, Career Services, Counseling, etc…
  • Advises students on processes associated with operations of the Military and Veteran Center office, including but not limited to benefit usage and planning, tuition assistance, and student support services.
  • Researches, analyzes, and processes weekly and end-of-term reports accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Assists with preparing for internal and external compliance surveys from Texas Veterans Commission and/or the Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative and professional working relationships with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and community agencies.
  • Supervises and trains VA student workers to provide quality customer service. Assists with counter coverage, answering office phones, registration, graduation, and other office support duties,
  • Assists in data collection and assessment for survey recognition and award applications.
  • Assists with the planning and execution of outreach events related to veterans’ education benefits, resources, and on-campus support.
  • Develops, implements, and manages programs that support veteran students in their academic, personal, and professional development.
  • Coordinates events, workshops, and seminars that address the specific needs of veterans and military families.
  • Collaborates with local, state, and federal agencies to secure funding, resources, and support for military-affiliated programs.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of legislation and policies affecting veterans and military personnel to ensure compliance and advocacy.
