FSLA Status: Nonexempt

Purpose of Job: Administers nursing care to residents within an assigned unit of The Army Residence Community. Maintains accurate records reflecting the resident’s condition, medications, and treatments. Administers medications and notes reactions. Assigns duties to ancillary nursing staff based on resident’s needs, available staff and unit needs. Directs and supervises ancillary nursing staff in the delivery of care. Accompanies physicians on rounds to answer questions, receive instructions and note resident’s care requirements.

and Responsibilities
  • Education:

    Graduation from an accredited school of Vocational nursing with a current licensed from the Texas State Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners
  • Training and experience:
    Previous experience as an L.V.N. is preferred.
  • Certifications/ Licensed:
    Maintain current, valid Licensed from Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners. Maintain Current CPR BLS Certification.
  • Job Knowledge:
    Knowledge of general nursing theory and practice, preferably in the area of geriatrics, for a better understanding of resident care problems.
  • Employment variables:
    May be required to work rotating shifts and/or rotating units, weekends, and holidays.
Primary Duties (11pm-7am)
  • Obtain report.
  • Read log.
  • Make resident rounds.
  • Makes assignments for nurse assistants.
  • Administers medications as ordered and record.
  • Checks in medications from pharmacy for accuracy.
  • Gives P.R. N. medications.
  • Checks critical residents frequently.
  • Calls and receives call from physicians as necessary.
  • Responds to emergencies.
  • Receives calls and answers inquiries from families.
  • Assures that all call lights are answered, and answer call lights personally when necessary.
  • Checks frequently for accuracy of medications administration record and treatment sheets.
  • Keeps update of nursing care plan current.
  • Completes accident and incident reports and follow up as needed.
  • Receives telephone orders and follow through as orders require.
  • Completes interdisciplinary notes appropriate to resident’s pay status.
  • Changes foley catheters if required.
  • Counts controlled drugs as assigned.
  • Checks and notes physician’s consolidated orders upon Physician signs them electronically.
  • Handles any transfers that occur, complete and distribute in-house transfer forms for all transfers which occur during the shift.
  • If not previously checked, checks monthly medication sheets prior to administration of medications. Indicates by your initials electronically that medications were passed as directed by physician orders. Makes corrections as needed.
  • Performs all accu-checks and gives insulin accordingly.
  • Provides a secure environment for residents and staff.
  • Gives report to on-coming shift.
  • Keeps medication cart, medication room and desk clean and orderly.
  • Completes lab requests as needed.
  • Gives and records treatments as ordered.
  • Sets up and administers tube feedings as ordered.
  • Completes weekly skin and decubitus assessments and records findings electronically.
  • Completes summaries on all residents.
  • Assesses new admissions with best practice follow through.
  • Notifies physician of any lab reports.
  • Checks that each resident is weighed monthly, or as ordered by the physician.
  • All shifts:
    Supervises the unit C.N.A. S in resident care.
  • Completes Merit evaluations and disciplinary counseling as necessary.
  • Completes monthly summaries on LTC residents
Secondary Duties
  • Administers P.R.N. drugs as needed, when authorized by appropriate authorities. documents the administration given, dose route of administration, time and person who gave permission to administer drug.
  • Uses the physician’s desk reference or other appropriate drug reference.
  • Checks physician’s orders against medication forms and against medication cards.
  • Properly maintains medications.
  • Maintains a clean working environment.
  • Performs duties of Nursing Assistant. (The Medication Aide also receives a copy of the Nurse Assistant job description).
