Job Summary

Under minimal supervision, provides nursing care for a group of patients assigned to the nurse based on matching the patients’ needs with the nurse’s competencies. Completes established competencies for the position within the designated introductory period. Other related duties as assigned.

Responsibilities
  • Assess human responses and adaptation to actual or potential health problems of the patient, family and/or significant other.
  • Institute and initiate a plan for patient care based on the initial assessment; implement and continuously evaluate interventions; reassess patient needs on an ongoing basis.
  • Recognize changing patient condition and utilize unit resources, chain of command and Rapid Response Team (RRT) in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Assimilate and prioritize information sources to take immediate and decisive patient‑focused action.
  • Support and maintain the physiologic stability of patients.
  • Respond with confidence and adapt to rapidly changing patient conditions.
  • Document all plans and care provided.
  • Identify need for education of patient, family and/or significant other and provide education through individualized instruction, the use of written materials and/or other available resources.
  • Assign nursing care to licensed staff, delegate nursing care to unlicensed staff and coordinate the flow of work.
  • Calculate and administer medications.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with multidisciplinary team members in the planning and management of patient care.
  • Respond to the unique needs of patients and families coping with unanticipated treatment, quality of life, and end‑of‑life decisions.
  • Monitor and allocate critical care services, recognizing the fiduciary role of nurses working in a resource‑intensive environment.
  • Participate in discharge planning; provide instruction to patient/family.
  • Maintain and promote professional standards and development by participating in in‑services, committees and staff meetings.
  • Serve as a role model for compassionate care and service excellence and commit to Studer Principles and "must haves".
  • Facilitate patient movement within the department and through the facility, proactively managing patient admissions, discharges and transfers.
  • Manage patient hand‑offs at shift change and between department and facilities; utilize documentation tools for hand‑offs as required.
  • Provide every patient the defined standard of care (i.e., core measures, chest pain protocol).
  • Utilize resources efficiently and effectively.
  • Maintain a safe environment.
  • Address patient population‑specific needs.
  • Participate in performance improvement needs.
Qualifications
  • Minimum Education: Graduate of accredited school of nursing.
  • Preferred Education: Bachelor's Degree.
  • Minimum Experience: None.
  • Preferred Experience: Two years in acute care. Previous clinical nursing experience in med/surg, telemetry or ICU.
