Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA) – PRN Job Summary
Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) provide comprehensive inpatient psychiatric and medical support in accordance with military and civil service standards, delivering direct patient care, monitoring vital signs, assisting with procedures, maintaining safety and infection control, and supporting daily living activities.
Required Qualifications- Education:
- Certificate. Completion of a state‑approved CNA program successfully passed state exam, and registered in the Nursing Assistant Registry whose qualifications have been examined and certified by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) or equivalent.
- Certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association or Red Cross.
- License:
- Must maintain a current, active, valid and unrestricted/unencumbered certification or authorizing document from any U.S. state, District of Columbia or U.S. territory or jurisdiction to work as a CNA.
- Experience:
- Minimum of one (1) year experience in the last two years in the required specialty under supervision of a Physician, LVN and/or RN.
- U.S. Citizenship is required
- Perform duties as required of any military or government civil service nursing assistant, including inpatient psychiatry. Work schedule may include scheduled or emergency requirements.
- Documentation and Record‑Keeping:
- Ensures accurate and timely medical documentation in compliance with BAMC policies.
- Manually and/or electronically record all patient care activities and patient status.
- Completes documentation within 72 hours in the patient’s medical record.
- Patient Assessment and Monitoring:
- Verifies patient identifiers for safety and accuracy.
- Performs, monitors, and records vital signs.
- Obtains and records patient height and weight.
- Monitors and records intake and output (I&O).
- Observes patients for distress or changes in condition and reports abnormalities to appropriate Physician, LVN and/or RN.
- Assists patients with basic self‑care and therapy information to ensure compliance with physician's orders.
- Dispense ice water and meal trays to patients.
- Perform a range of personal care tasks including bathing, feeding, lifting, turning, ambulating, and providing oral, hair, skin and related hygiene care.
- Check IV infusion sites for complications.
- Apply and monitor hot and cold packs as prescribed.
- Perform daily quality control checks on glucose test monitor.
- Collect or assist in the collection of specimens such as fecal occult blood and urine.
- Assist health care provider in examinations/procedures such as physical exams, X‑rays, lumbar punctures, biopsies, PAP/Pelvic examinations etc.
- Assist in admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.
- Transport patients within BAMC for tests, procedures or appointments.
- Provide general information to patients and visitors regarding hospital policies and directions.
- Reinforce instructions provided by professional staff and provide general information regarding unit and hospital policies.
- Care for patients in isolation.
- Assist in orientation/precepting of newly assigned personnel.
- Assist with administrative tasks.
- Set up and stamp component parts of patients’ records, file lab/X‑ray slips and other documents in prescribed order, and record observations and other pertinent data on appropriate records.
- Assist in the general maintenance of the unit and patient care equipment (clean instruments, equipment and patient units; sort and store supplies, linen, equipment; dispose of trash and soiled linen; restock medical forms).
- Equipment monitoring and assistance.
- Complete all other duties as assigned within skill set.
- Communication and Reporting:
- Report potential/actual problems to physician, LVN, or RN for appropriate action.
- Maintain clear and effective professional communication with the healthcare team, staff, patients and visitors.
- Work cooperatively with the multidisciplinary team.
- Safety and Infection Control:
- Maintain a clean patient environment.
- Exercise universal precautions set by the Centers for Disease Control when providing direct or indirect patient care involving possible exposure.
