Job Description

Senior Apheresis RN practices as an expert practitioner of nursing, working with MSRH, the Mays Cancer Center Apheresis unit, and stem cell transplant and cellular therapy (SCTCT) teams. The RN demonstrates expertise in caring for patients with multiple and complex problems, provides clinical leadership on the unit, serves as a resource and system‑wide consultant, and participates in efforts to increase nursing knowledge.

The Registered Nurse IV may serve as a back‑up to the clinical leader. Works with the cellular therapy lab personnel, the SCTCT infusion center, coordinators, and the rest of the SCTCT team, ensuring protocols, workflows, and compliance with department, affiliate, unit policies, regulatory requirements, the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy, and system‑wide standards. This role may cross over to inpatients to perform stem cell collections or therapeutic apheresis and may report to the Senior SCTCT Director and the Medical Director of the Apheresis Program and Lab Services.

This position may require the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure per Texas EO‑GA‑48.

Responsibilities

  • Verifies patients' needs are met and evaluates unit nursing care and performance.
  • Ensures adherence to institutional, divisional, and unit based policies and procedures as well as external regulatory requirements.
  • Participates in planning work of assigned units and coordinates activities with other patient care units and related departments.
  • Accurately and completely maintains patient records, including computer records.
  • Coordinates, designs, and implements educational programs to meet the identified learning needs of staff, patients, and families; promotes staff participation in continuing education, orientation, competency, in‑service, and staff development offerings.
  • Assists Nurse Manager by providing assigned staff with performance feedback and opportunity to set professional goals.
  • Models and promotes behaviors that effectively give continual feedback to staff and colleagues; integrates best practice standards regarding retention of staff in all aspects of practice.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates new and creative approaches to meeting goals.
  • Leads and participates in and promotes performance improvement initiatives that focus on identified patient safety or quality of care opportunities.
  • Performs other job‑related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through ongoing skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations.
  • Possesses sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English necessary to perform essential functions of the job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security.
  • Strong assessment, organizational, and problem‑solving skills as evidenced by ability to prioritize multiple tasks and components.
  • Ability to function independently and exercise judgment in interactions with physicians, interprofessional care team, and patients and their families.
  • Uses critical thinking skills and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Promotes expert professional practice by evaluating her/his own practice and patient outcomes.
  • Provides peer review to improve practice.
  • Demonstrates in‑depth knowledge applicable to stem cell collection, CAR‑T cellular therapy, apheresis concepts and practices; writes, develops, updates, and edits MSRH/Mays Cancer Center nursing and FACT policies.
  • Interacts respectfully with other employees, professional staff, and/or external contacts to offer ideas, identify issues, obtain information, or deliver services.
  • Uses time efficiently to identify short‑ and long‑term priorities, fulfill realistic goals, and respond to schedules of others.
  • All required certifications remain current and valid throughout employment.
  • Serves as a preceptor/mentor by fostering a teaching environment. Position eligible for preceptor premium pay with completion of preceptor education and leader approval.
Education
  • Bachelor's of Science in Nursing required.
  • Texas RN or Compact RN License required at time of hire.
  • RQI BLS required within 30 days of hire and must be renewed quarterly.
Required Skills

Minimum of five (5) years of professional nursing experience is required; experience in an apheresis field is preferred.
