The Veterinarian will apply a professional knowledge of veterinary science in the care and medical examinations of Military Working Dogs (MWDs). The Veterinarian conducts physical exams; interprets radiographic images; assesses hip stability; assesses oral health and normal dental condition; and interprets blood, urine, and fecal tests. Conducts semi-annual, sick call, and pre-departure physical exams of military working dogs; diagnoses problems including the interpretation of diagnostic imaging studies and other special tests and procedures based on appropriate education and training;
develops and tracks medical therapies and provides therapeutic medical directives.
Duties:
- Performs physical examinations of canines.
- Performs pre-purchase medical examinations of Military Working Dogs (MWDs).
- Conducts physical exams; interprets radiographic images of hips, elbows, and lumbosacral vertebrae; assesses hip stability; assesses oral health and normal dental condition; and interprets blood, urine, and fecal tests.
- Recommends purchase or rejection of candidates.
- Conducts semi-annual, sick call, and pre-departure physical exams of military working dogs; diagnoses problems including the interpretation of diagnostic imaging studies and other special tests and procedures, based on appropriate education and training.
- Supervises the collection and submission of diagnostic specimens.
- Performs laboratory specimen evaluation and interpretation.
- Performs patient assessment and assesses fitness for duty and medical readiness for deployment.
- Develops and tracks medical therapies.
- Provides therapeutic medical directives (i.e., initiation, administration, alteration, and termination of treatment regimens).
- Directs and supervises administration of vaccinations and medications.
- Manages all aspects of infectious disease control and surveillance.
- Performs routine diagnostic imaging to include basic digital radiography and limited ultrasonography.
- Performs pre-medication, induction, and maintenance of anesthesia.
- Assures proper monitoring and aftercare of recovering patients.
- Performs routine surgical and dental procedures to include endodontic (root canal) dental procedures, preventive and therapeutic periodontal dental procedures, tooth extraction, dental cleaning and treatment and other similar dental procedures, caudectomy, gastropexy, and laceration repair as indicated.
- Processes Military Working Dog (MWD) candidates through examination and application of permanent tattoo identification.
- Provides resuscitative care to animals during emergent situations.
- Maintains functional knowledge of the regulatory health requirements required to transport animals throughout the world.
- Issues health certifications.
- Performs rabies bite quarantine examinations and releases rabies quarantine suspects.
- Performs non-routine and advanced clinical procedures conferring with clinical specialists, as necessary.
- Maintains medical records using the Problem-Oriented Medical Record format in legible handwriting or Remote Operating Veterinary Record electronic medical record entry.
- Directs and supervises military and civilian technicians.
- Provides administrative support with workload reporting, equipment requisitions, and medical data gathering as directed.
- Possesses skills necessary to operate office automation equipment, computers, and peripheral equipment to enter treatments, record findings, complete forms, and treatment sheets.
- Exercises considerable judgment in determining the personality traits and aggressiveness of animals presented for evaluation and treatment.
- Maintains a high level of professional skill maintaining proper records, inventories, and security of controlled drugs.
- Follows patient progress, manages care until patient is discharged from hospital and released from medical hold.
- Ensures compliance with relevant veterinary regulations and laws and assures compliance with AAALAC standards, Animal Welfare Act requirements, US Army Veterinary Medical Standardization Board clinical guidelines, TB MED 298, Handbook of Veterinary Care for the Military Working Dog, and Hospital SOPs
- Works independently under the administrative control of the Supervisory Veterinarian with negligible management guidance.
- Responsible for independently carrying out work, setting work schedules and objectives.
- Directs military and civilian employees and reports unresolved personnel issues to the respective Service Chiefs.
- Complies with the regulations and guidelines governing federal and civilian employees.
- Directs military and civilian animal health technicians and veterinary interns, externs, and residents.
- Promotes an environment in which employees are empowered to participate in and contribute to effective mission accomplishment.
- Discharges security responsibilities by ensuring education and compliance with security directives for employees with access to controlled substances.
