Job Summary and Qualifications

The Laboratory Supervisor assists the Manager with day‑to‑day operations of the section/department, including managing personnel, developing and monitoring quality control, quality assurance and proficiency testing programs, developing and evaluating laboratory methodologies, protocols and techniques, and overseeing care, maintenance, and utilization of department equipment, supplies, and inventories.

Essential Job Functions
  • Supports Managers in personnel activities such as interviewing, work allocation, orientation and training, staff development, problem resolution, evaluating performance, making recommendations for personnel actions, and motivating employees to achieve peak performance.
  • Understands laboratory methods and demonstrates knowledge of pathological processes, correlates disease states with test results, and independently performs specimen processing and testing, including moderate and high complexity testing as appropriate per facility, completing competency checklist, and administering quality control and calibration of instrumentation where applicable.
  • Assures compliance with accrediting agencies, understands and applies CQI principles, anticipates needs and develops, implements, and evaluates quality assurance programs, and provides corrective action and documentation.
  • Develops and evaluates laboratory methodologies, procedures and techniques in clinical specialties.
  • Acts as a resource to customers within and outside the department on testing methods, procedures, laboratory operations, safety, and training, serving as laboratory liaison and contact person in the absence of other management personnel.
  • Oversees ordering, care, maintenance, and utilization of department equipment, supplies, and inventories.
  • Additional Job Functions
  • Manages special projects, developing plans, coordinating resources, setting timelines, keeping Manager informed of progress, and completing projects within established limits.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates programs for section/department orientation, competency and training; validates competency of co‑workers or subordinates.
  • Attends Leadership Skills courses and applies new knowledge, understanding, or skill to practical use on the job, continually improving learning.
