Job Summary

The Evolutionary & Developmental Genomics Lab at The University of Texas at San Antonio invites applications for a Research Associate to join an NIH-funded research program investigating genetic conflict and meiotic drive in the male germline of Drosophila. Our lab integrates Drosophila genetics, molecular biology, and evolutionary genomics to understand how selfish genetic elements violate normal transmission principles during gamete formation, how these conflicts shape fertility and genome evolution, and how small-RNA-based defense pathways evolve to suppress them.

The Research Associate will play a central role in experimental projects focused on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of meiotic drivers, with opportunities to contribute intellectually to experimental design, data interpretation, and manuscript preparation. This is an excellent position for candidates seeking advanced research experience prior to an academic, biotech, or Ph.D./postdoctoral career—or for those interested in a longer-term research staff role.

This is a grant funded position and contingent upon funding availability.

This position will be filled at the level III or IV based on finalist qualifications and department need.

Core Responsibilities
  • Conduct molecular cloning and genetic experiments related to meiotic drive mechanisms.
  • Assist with Drosophila crosses, stock maintenance, and phenotypic assays.
  • Perform and troubleshoot molecular and biochemical assays.
  • Maintain detailed experimental records and contribute to data analysis.
  • Assist with lab organization, reagent preparation, and protocol optimization.
  • Contribute to manuscripts, figures, and presentations as appropriate.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, or a related field.
  • One (1) year of related work experience to include:
    • Strong background in molecular biology, including
    • DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, and qPCR.
    • Cloning and plasmid construction.
  • This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree or Ph.D. in Biology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, or a related field.
  • Prior experience with CRISPR mutagenesis.
  • Experience with protein biochemistry (e.g., expression, purification, Western blotting, co-IP).
  • Experience working with Drosophila (genetics, husbandry, crosses).
  • Familiarity with microscopy, germline biology, or reproductive biology.
  • Interest in evolutionary genetics, genome conflict, or selfish genetic elements.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a research team.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Working Conditions
  • Usual laboratory or office conditions.
  • Sometimes working with hazardous equipment or materials.
  • May require travel off-campus and extended overnight stays.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to push, pull, or lift up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to feel, reach with hands and…
