Research Associate II

HJF is seeking a Research Associate II to perform research and/or development in collaboration with other scientific and technical staff. The role may exercise technical discretion in the design, execution, and interpretation of experiments that contribute to project strategies.

This position will be in support of the Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio (NAMRU‑SA) at Fort Sam Houston. NAMRU‑SA is a major research and development center whose mission is to conduct gap‑driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense (DoD) personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations. The Research Associate will provide intramural research and development (R&D) support services for four scientific directorates:
Directed Energy Health Effects (DEHE), Combat Casualty Care and Operational Medicine (CCC&OM), Craniofacial Health and Restorative Medicine (CH&RM), and Research Services (RSD).

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic, and government clients by administering, managing, and supporting pre‑eminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners.

Responsibilities
  • Support laboratory‑based research applying the latest scientific knowledge to challenges in trauma, hemorrhage and resuscitation, immunomodulation, directed energy health effects, and craniofacial health and trauma.
  • Assist the government with administrative tasks, including preparation and revision of Performance Work Statements (PWS), IACUC and IRB protocols, proposals, manuscripts, reports, and presentation editing and review.
  • Coordinate the implementation of research studies, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, maintenance of study records, and audit activities.
  • Assist in ordering and maintaining inventory of research supplies under contract.
  • Assist in market research for equipment and maintenance services related to research under contract.
  • Ensure IACUC/IRB requirements are followed.
  • Modify and plan research experiment schedules, procedures, and tests.
  • Conduct laboratory experiments, literature research, or other data‑collection methods for research projects.
  • Maintain a clean and operational lab space.
  • Report on the status of research activities.
  • Route administrative paperwork related to scientific products.
  • Maintain data and records securely, including use of an assigned laboratory notebook.
  • Oversee entry‑level contract personnel.
  • Write and edit material for publication and presentation.
  • Instruct contract personnel on technical procedures, equipment operation, and laboratory maintenance.
  • Schedule and coordinate research activities.
Education and Experience
  • Master’s Degree plus two (2) years of experience, or or Bachelor’s degree plus five (5) years of full‑time research experience in a related field.
Required Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of complex laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to meet project deadlines.
  • Strong communication and analytical skills.
  • U.S. citizenship and capacity to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance, including background check and drug screening.
  • Certification in American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), American Red Cross CPR or equivalent, and American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Course.
Physical Capabilities
  • Lifting: materials up to 10 lb.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.
