The Naval Medical Research Unit - San Antonio (NAMRU-SA) Combat Casualty Care and Operational Medicine Directorate (CCC&OM) is located in the Tri‑Service Research Laboratory at Joint Base San Antonio‑Fort Sam Houston, TX. NAMRU‑SA conducts gap‑driven, directed‑energy, combat casualty care, and craniofacial health research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense personnel. The CCC&OM Directorate focuses on protecting, resuscitating, and stabilizing combat casualties at frontline points of care.
WhatWill I Be Doing?
As an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) participant, you will work with a Principal Investigator and the project lead to design experiments, collect data, and analyze findings related to pre‑clinical research for the development and optimization of drug products and advanced therapies for the treatment of hemorrhagic shock. You will engage in the design, implementation, and post‑procedural analysis of these projects under a mentor’s guidance, and collaborate closely with staff within the CCC&OM Directorate.

Appointment Length12‑month, full‑time research appointment, with the possibility of renewal for additional periods depending on funding, project assignment, and program rules.

U.S. Citizen with a Ph.D. (or currently pursuing) in biology, biochemistry, microbiology, physiology, or a related field. Thorough knowledge of advanced biological and physiological principles is required. Desired qualifications include coursework and laboratory experience in human biology and physiology, as well as:
- Animal research experience (preferred).
- Experience with surgical techniques and blood analyses (preferred).
- Experience with flow cytometry (preferred, but not required).
- Data collection and statistical analysis experience in Graph Pad Prism or similar software, and Microsoft Office suite (preferred).
- A strong publication record, scientific presentations, and grant‑writing skills (preferred).
