Job SummaryCombo Clerks serve as the primary customer service point during in‑store operations, processing all forms of payment, reconciling cash drawers, and supporting other departments as needed.
Responsibilities- Provide friendly customer service and resolve difficult situations with supervisor assistance when needed.
- Identify produce items accurately and process produce codes.
- Process all transaction types—cash, checks, coupons, debit, credit, gift cards, EFS, EBT, and WIC—following detailed payment acceptance procedures.
- Use store layout knowledge to assist customers with inquiries and problem‑solving.
- Maintain a high scan rate at the register to minimize customer wait times.
- Prepare and maintain accurate records for cash drops, coin needs, and the assigned till throughout the shift.
- Adhere to company policies, including accounting for items at the bottom of baskets.
- Comply with California ABCA and ATF regulations regarding alcohol sales, s, and sales hours.
- Void items or transactions and resolve technical issues at the check stand with supervisor assistance.
- Supervise and operate self‑checkout stations, ensuring accurate scanning and payment processing.
- Reconcile the till at shift end, balancing all payment forms and the total processed for the day.
- Process customer transactions accurately and efficiently through the POS system.
- Stay current on promotions and store policies to provide accurate information.
- Report unsafe conditions and suspicious activities to maintain a safe store environment.
- Validate $20 or higher denominations for authenticity and report counterfeit bills to management.
- Perform any other duties as assigned.
- Proficiency in basic math and cash handling procedures.
- Understanding of customer service best practices and strategies to engage customers.
- Strong communication skills for interaction with customers and team members.
- Ability to operate POS systems and cashier equipment accurately.
- Attention to detail for transaction accuracy and cash handling.
- Basic computer skills for POS operation.
- Adaptability to changing situations, multitasking, and effective work with diverse personalities.
- Quick decision‑making ability in high‑pressure environments.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- No prior experience required; on‑the‑job training provided.
- Previous retail or customer service experience is a plus.
- Minimum age 18 years.
- Stand and walk for extended periods during an 8‑hour shift.
- Lift and carry items up to 25 pounds frequently, up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Perform repetitive motions such as reaching, bending, stooping, squatting, and handling products.
- Operate money handling tools and POS equipment with manual dexterity.
- Maintain clear communication while moving quickly to assist customers.
- Work hours vary; availability required on weekends, evenings, and holidays.
- Indoor, climate‑controlled environment with adequate lighting and ventilation.
- Primary work stations include check stand POS, self‑checkout, and count room.
- Dress code: professional attire with name tag, company‑issued shirts, hats, jackets, or personal shirts in black, burgundy, or blue, in good repair.
- Possible exposure to moving mechanical parts and cleaning chemicals.
- Noise level usually low to moderate, with occasional loud periods from customers or equipment.
