The Public Safety Officer is responsible for providing security to protect the safety and welfare of students, employees, visitors, and property within the control and jurisdiction of The University of Texas at San Antonio. This role serves as a Campus Security Authority as defined by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act) and enforces the University of Texas System Administration rules and regulations regarding safeguarding students, employees, visitors, property, and buildings.
CoreResponsibilities
- Enforce the rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of the University of Texas System and the University.
- Conduct regular patrols (on foot, golf cart, motor vehicle, including a truck, and by bicycle if certified) of both the main and downtown campuses.
- Perform guard tours of controlled spaces, patrol buildings, parking lots, and other UTSA‑controlled property to assist with asset protection, provide security presence, and prevent crime.
- Inspect buildings and grounds to check for fires, water leaks, and potential security and safety hazards. Investigate and report abnormalities.
- Assist with security surveys to identify safety and security deficiencies such as lighting, landscaping, and safety concerns.
- Inspect emergency phones and other security equipment.
- Assist with emergency response and provide emergency assistance when needed.
- Provide security support for special events (e.g., weddings, sporting events, concerts) by opening and closing facilities, conducting security sweeps, assigning fixed posts, bag checks, and security camera surveillance.
- Provide customer service to the public by offering security escorts, motorist assistance, information and direction to students, employees, and visitors; direct traffic.
- Utilize a handheld radio for communication with dispatch, supervisors, other Public Safety officers, and Police.
- Write electronic reports and take observational field notes.
- Unlock and secure buildings and classrooms in both public and non‑public areas; report issues regarding the function and maintenance of entries and exits, including doors, door locks, and other security systems.
- Respond to calls for service, alarms, and/or observed behaviors. Provide requested services promptly and in accordance with policies and procedures.
- Examine credentials of persons desiring to enter controlled areas.
- Attend meetings and training.
- Assist security service and police teams.
- Perform other duties as assigned, including emergency recall and/or remaining on‑site or working as required.
- High School Diploma, Vocational Training, or Apprenticeship in a related field.
- One (1) year of demonstrated ability to uphold responsibilities, reliably meet commitments and expectations, and exhibit dependability and accountability through employment, volunteer work, or community involvement.
- Ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure per Texas EO‑GA‑48.

- Familiarity and experience with Police Department equipment

- Work involves a high degree of hazard normally associated with law enforcement.
- May be required to work day, evening, night, and power shifts with varying days off.
- Exposure to outside weather conditions; must be flexible to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Requires walking and standing without the aid of canes, crutches, or similar tools.
- Assignments may vary between the Main campus and Downtown campus to provide 24/7 coverage.
- Must be able to walk, climb stairs, stand, and sit, both inside and outside, for extended periods of time.
