Job Summary

The Maintenance Worker III provides journeyman‑level skills in plumbing, electrical maintenance/repair, carpentry, or painting. This role ensures compliance with specifications and safety regulations, inspects completed work, maintains records, and submits reports.

Core Responsibilities
  • Provides journeyman‑level maintenance and repair work of plumbing, painting, electrical, carpentry, air conditioning, and refrigeration.
  • Performs a variety of maintenance tasks including installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical motors and switches, circuit breakers, outlets, fixtures, fittings, and accessories; installation and repair of plumbing in new construction or remodeling; staining and refinishing furniture, other general carpentry work related to remodeling and construction; prepares surfaces prior to applying any coverings; taping, floating sheetrock joints, and other conditioning work in connection with new construction or remodeling.
  • Inspects completed work for conformance to all specifications and regulations; maintains daily records of work performed; cross‑trains with various shops; and reports need for specific repairs to supervisors.
  • Submits reports on status and costs of maintenance projects.
  • Serves in an on‑call maintenance capacity to support after‑hours and weekend operational needs.
  • Provides supervision, guidance and training to Maintenance Workers I and II.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Required Qualifications
    • High School Diploma, Vocational Training, or Apprenticeship in a related field.
    • Five (5) years of related work experience.
      • Additional education may substitute for experience on a one‑year per year basis.
    • Ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure.

    Working Conditions
    • Exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards, hazardous chemicals, high‑pressure water and air systems, high‑speed equipment, confined spaces, and heights. Exposure to variable Texas weather conditions and/or physical hazards such as working in elevated and confined spaces, in attics, sub‑floors, machine rooms, on roofs, and other operational areas.
    • Required to wear personal protective equipment, including steel‑toe or non‑slip shoes, eye protection, hard hat, back belt, body harness, biological protective gear, ear muffs or plugs, respirator, and arc‑flash protection. Must wear and properly maintain uniforms.
    • Required to be on stand‑by call status, carrying a pager, cellphone, or two‑way radio as assigned, and respond to after‑hours emergency calls. Required to be on stand‑by call status for overtime, evenings, after hours, odd hours, shift work, weekends, and/or holidays as needed. Flexibility in scheduling may be required.
    Physical Demands
    • Medium work:
      Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly. Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands, reach, and talk or hear. Frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, use repetitive motions. Ability to climb ladders and stairways and work on building rooftops at high elevations.

      Ability to work in confined spaces such as ceilings, under‑floor crawlspaces, and manholes.
    • Repetitive motions that may include wrists, hands, and fingers. Reaching overhead, at or below shoulder level. Operating machinery and/or power tools. Required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as operating machines such as lathes, drill presses, power saws, and mills where the seeing job is at or within arm's reach; performing mechanical or skilled trades tasks of a non‑repetitive nature.
