Vehicle Maintenance Technician
Purpose of Position:
Performs quality inspections and repairs to Wharton ISD operated vehicles. Communicates clearly, professionally and in a timely manner with employees. Represents WISD to its customers and the public in a professional, courteous, and serving manner. Works within the WISD mission, vision and values policy framework.
Primary
Job Functions:
- Perform thorough and accurate Preventative Maintenance Inspections.
- Follow company required schedules and complete all required Preventative Maintenance.
- Perform unscheduled maintenance as needed and directed by the supervisor.
- Perform complex operations including engine, electrical, fuel systems, brakes, exhaust repairs, and field tests.
- Perform emergency roadside services as needed.
- Document repairs and parts on work orders completely and accurately.
- Maintain tools and workplace so that shop conditions are neat and orderly.
- The job may require on-call duty, extended hours, or weekend work.
- Maintains and demonstrates a helpful, positive, and pleasant attitude towards coworkers and customers.

- Performs the job functions of a driver when necessary.

Essential Education, Knowledge, and
Skills:
- Possesses comprehensive knowledge of diesel engines and/or internal combustion engines, automatic transmissions, air brakes, steering, and drive lines used by Gold Star Transit.
- Possesses a working knowledge of the hand tools, mechanic tools, and test equipment utilized in the repair of diesel and/or internal combustion engines, and associated components.
- Possesses a basic understanding of the theory of electricity and also be able to read and understand wiring diagrams.
- Possesses the skills to read and apply the information learned in repair manuals.
- Possesses the knowledge regarding the operation and repair of air conditioning systems.
- Holds a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with all appropriate endorsements and classifications, and all other required licenses and permits.
- Possesses basic mathematics skills as it relates to the duties of this position.
- Possesses the skills associated with the ability to diagnose engine and component malfunction.
- Use of personal tools required.
- Ability to pass a physical examination and drug test.
Working Conditions and Demands:
Approximately 90% of work is indoors; drives vehicles for testing purposes and as replacements for vehicles that have broken down. Hazardous equipment includes lathes, acetylene torches; moving parts in engines, burns from hot engines and parts, hot water and oil; chemicals such as cleaning solvents and solutions. Exposure to exhaust and welding fumes, dust from brake lining parts and equipment during cleaning;
and odors from diesel oil, torches. Overall physical requirements:
Heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Requires individual to work well in a fast-paced environment.
