Description

The Crane Shop Service Technician performs inspections, diagnoses, and repairs of diesel‑powered heavy equipment and/or related equipment or components, following established procedures and guidelines. Works independently or as a member of a team to provide basic mechanical services that satisfies customer needs and achieves departmental goals.

Mid‑level position – generally has more than seven years of experience and/or demonstrated job‑relevant knowledge/skills. A Level IV Technician has a broad knowledge of the field’s standard and technical concepts, practices, and procedures. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of standard, complex, and technical tasks; is self‑starting and requires minimal supervision; is often a team member on a large project.

  • Essential Functions
    • Models, promotes, reinforces, and rewards the consistent use of HOLT’s Values Based Leadership (VBL) tools, models, and processes to ensure alignment with our Vision, Values, and Mission
    • Troubleshoots and diagnoses equipment malfunctions and failures
    • Disassembles and assembles machine components to manufacturer’s specifications through the use of hand tools, pneumatic tools, and any specialized tooling
    • Rebuilds, repairs, reconditions, and maintains equipment and components
    • Demonstrates good customer relations and support; communicates customer needs to shop Plans and controls cost of repair jobs
    • Completes parts orders and identifies parts for return
    • Provides a significant amount of task and behavior‑oriented mentoring, and training to others
    • Maintains all equipment and work areas – keeps in good, clean, and orderly condition
    • Works safely at all times and adheres to all applicable safety policies; complies with all company policies, procedures, and standards
    • Works overtime as required by workload and customers’ needs
    • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; e.g., Pro Tech Technician Training Paths
    • Requires regular and punctual employee attendance
    • Performs other duties as assigned
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Extensive knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance
    • Knowledge of heavy equipment machines such as dozers, excavators, motor graders, and other dirt‑moving equipment
    • Demonstrates proficiency with current computer software, related hardware, and machine electronic systems
    • Quality control analysis skills – Conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance and communicate findings
    • Operation and control skills – Controlling operations of equipment or systems
    • Equipment selection skills – Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job
    • Ability to operate a conventional forklift and an overhead crane
    • The ability to quickly and repeatedly operate the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions
    • Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, and equipment used in mechanical repair
    • The ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects
    • The ability to read, write, and understand information
    • The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences
    • Owns a large and complete assortment of appropriate hand tools and may have some specialized tools
    Requirements

    Education and Experience
    • Seven or more years of diesel‑powered heavy equipment repair experience preferred
    • Ability and knowledge to read/use schematics and diagrams experience is preferred
    • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
    • Graduation from a diesel technology program preferred
