Job Title: General Maintenance/Painter/Floor Covering Installer

Exemption Status: Nonexempt/At-Will

Pay grade: H4

Reports to: Director of Maintenance, Crew Leader, Building Trades Foreman, District Foreman

Dept./School: MOST

Primary

Purpose:

Under general supervision, apply coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel, or lacquer to decorate and protect exterior and interior surfaces, trimmings, and fixtures of buildings and structures throughout the district. The position is also responsible for repairing school district furniture, carpet laying and general maintenance.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Clear and valid Texas driver’s license

Special Knowledge/

Skills:

  • Knowledge of equipment, materials, methods, practices, and tools used in painting trade
  • Ability to properly apply paints
  • Demonstrate ability in skill areas related to the position basic job function
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to work independently

Experience:

  • 1 year experience in general painting, furniture repair and refinishing, drywall, flooring and carpet laying

Major

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Prepare surfaces for painting, including sanding and removing old paint, filling holes, cracks, and joints with appropriate filler. Tape, float, and texture walls and ceilings.
  • Select premixed paints or mix required portions of pigment, oil, and thinning and drying substances to prepare paint to match specified colors.
  • Paint surfaces, using brushes, spray gun, paint rollers, or other methods to achieve required effects. Stain, seal, and varnish wood surfaces.
  • Repair and finish furniture.
  • Lay carpet in all school district buildings.
  • Erect scaffolding, set up ladders, or use hoists to perform tasks above ground level.
  • Pick up and deliver painting supplies to campuses; maintain delivery records.
  • Receive and complete work orders. Identify and complete needed repairs on buildings, grounds, and equipment using established inspection procedures. Maintain accurate records on material and labor used.
  • Maintain inventory of tools and assist with inventory control of materials and equipment.
  • Inspect jobs after completion and ensure areas are clean.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment and ensure equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Maintain an acceptable driving record due to insurance requirements regarding district vehicles.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing. Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Handle and dispose of paint, stain, varnish, and other chemicals according to established procedures.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Perform other general maintenance job-related duties as may be assigned by Paint/Floor Covering Crew Leaders, Building Trades Foreman, District Foreman, Director of MOST or designee.

    Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) on a daily basis
