Position Summary

The Journeyman Electrician position is responsible for providing journeyman level skills and expertise in the installation, maintenance, preventive maintenance, remodeling, repair, servicing, and operation of the University’s electrical systems from 120 volts up to 480 volts. The position assembles, installs, and repairs circuitry, switch gear, distribution systems, and all related components, while planning layout and installs wiring for electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment.

The Journeyman Electrician is part of Facilities Management Department and reports to Master Electrician Supervisor.

Description of Job Duties

  • Respond and perform service calls in response to work orders and preventative maintenance.
  • Install, maintain, and repair electrical wiring, fixtures, and equipment.
  • Troubleshoot electrical systems to identify problems and make repairs as needed following detailed operational and maintenance procedures.
  • Run/pull wire and install conduit; install and repair electrical circuits; and perform electrical work to support other trades (i.e., HVAC , Plumbing, etc.).
  • Inspect and test electrical systems and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair.
  • Test continuity of circuits to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of components with testing instruments such as multi-meter, battery and buzzer, and oscilloscope; troubleshoots and diagnoses electric systems to detect and repair functions.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, schematics, and electrical code specifications to determine the layout of industrial electrical equipment installations.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment and adheres to applicable safety procedures.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance and detailed inspection of electrical systems.
  • Install control and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays, and circuit‑breaker panels from 120 volts up to 480 volts.
  • Support “Light the Way” annual event.
  • Maintain and document maintenance records, logs, and work order forms.
  • Maintains knowledge of the current National Electrical Code and its application.
  • Keeps current of changes in operational procedures, new equipment, and other related equipment; works in conjunction with other trades, staff personnel in support of daily job tasks; and informs appropriate personnel of unusual conditions, problems, or deficiencies and takes appropriate actions.
  • Serves as lead electrician in absence of Master Electrician.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Proficiency with the National Electrical Code and local codes.
  • Strong proficiency in the general practices of commercial/industrial electricaltrade and safety and standard diagnostic and measuringelectrical tools and devices.
