Position: Swimming Pool Supervisor (Summer & Extended Season Outdoor Pools)

Job Summary

Under general supervision, the Pool Supervisor is responsible for ensuring that all rules, regulations, policies, and instructions pertaining to the operation and maintenance of the swimming pool are carried out by all employees under their supervision. They ensure quality customer service at each location and handle inquiries from the general public. They exercise direct supervision over assigned staff.

This position is an "unclassified" position and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. It is likewise subject to at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason.

Work Location

This position can be placed at any one of the twenty-four (24) City outdoor pools. At the Department's discretion, the work location and days/hours may be subject to change.

Work Schedule

Shifts will vary during pool operating hours of 7:15 a.m. – 8:15 p.m.;
Monday – Sunday. Shifts will vary during Lifeguard training classes, special events, and Aquatics programs.

Responsibilities & Duties
  • Enforce pool rules and regulations in a courteous manner.
  • Maintain schedules, submit all necessary reports including a daily attendance report.
  • Check all mechanical equipment and perform routine maintenance, including minor equipment repair and cleaning of pool, locker rooms, and all other areas of the building and grounds, where necessary.
  • Evaluate existing situations and make decisions concerning hazardous weather conditions to ensure that the pool is properly staffed at all times.
  • Supervise swim lesson instructors and assistants for the summer "Learn to Swim" program.
  • Perform First Aid and CPR for pool patrons, occasionally lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds to administer aid.
  • Require that an accident report be completed immediately and submitted to the Aquatic Services Supervisor within 24 hours.
  • Make routine checks of the pool area to ensure appropriate behavior is being displayed by employees and patrons.
  • Supervise, train and evaluate assigned staff.
  • Participate in continuous in‑service skills training.
  • Perform related duties and fulfill responsibilities as required.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
  • Two (2) completed seasons as a Lifeguard.
  • Successful completion of a nationally recognized Lifeguard Training, including Lifeguard Certification, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and Standard First Aid within 14 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Lifeguard Instructor Certification.
  • Water Safety Instructor Certification.
  • Aquatic Fitness Certifications.
  • Certified Pool Operator.
  • Experience with Digi Quatics.
Applicant Information
  • Applicants may substitute two years of related full‑time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience to meet the minimum requirements. One year of full‑time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
  • Applicants selected for employment must receive satisfactory results from pre‑employment drug testing and background checks. If required, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.

  • Knowledge of pool maintenance and operations.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with representatives of the community, public and private groups, and organizations to provide the best possible image of the San Antonio Department of Parks and Recreation.
  • Ability to train, supervise, and evaluate employees.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to perform all the essential functions of the position, with or without accommodations.
  • Ability to work in an indoor or outdoor recreation facility with exposure to temperature extremes and noise.
