Position: Dock Worker/Forklift Operator - Wed-Sun 5AM

Job Summary

The dockworker must efficiently load and unload freight, ensuring that the correct items are placed on the correct trucks. Safety is paramount, and dock workers use equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, and manual techniques to handle materials. Proper securing of freight with airbags, cardboard, straps, and other supplies is critical to prevent damage during transport. The dock worker position directly impacts the reliability of deliveries to customers.

Primary

Responsibilities
  • Load and unload freight on trailers using a motorized forklift, pallet jack or manually in compliance with state and federal DOT guidelines.
  • Use various loading techniques, such as tight and cross loading.
  • Transport freight continuously throughout the service center on non‑forgiving surfaces.
  • Utilize the Dock Yard Management System to monitor freight shipment locations.
  • Read and interpret shipping labels and complete required freight movement forms (shipping orders, city stripping manifests, freight bills, overage/damage reports, exception forms).
  • Hand‑load, rewrap, or stack freight as necessary; insure quality loading of all trailers.
  • Secure freight inside trailers using appropriate tools and supplies (pallets, straps, rope).
  • Maintain frequent contact with service center personnel in a fast‑paced, deadline‑oriented environment.
  • Perform any additional duties and tasks assigned by management.
Job Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Working knowledge of safe and efficient lifting and transporting procedures.
  • Knowledge of various loading techniques (tight and cross loading).
  • Ability to complete freight movement forms and use the dock yard management system.
  • Availability to work at all times to meet customer pickup and delivery schedules.
  • Ability to operate hand‑held tablets when required.
  • Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English.
Physical Demands
  • Stands up to 8 hours/shift on non‑forgiving surfaces such as concrete, wood, or metal that may be wet or slippery.
  • Sits on a forklift up to 8 hours/shift.
  • Walks up to 8 hours/day on non‑forgiving surfaces.
  • Bending/stooping/kneeling
    :
    Frequently squats to handle, position, and secure freight.
  • Climbing
    :
    Gets on and off forklifts many times throughout the day; maneuvers in small spaces.
  • Moving Materials
    :
    Loads and unloads trailers with freight up to 500 lbs., handles large items such as 100‑lb containers, 300‑lb drums, tires, and cartons weighing up to 100 lbs.
  • Pushing/Pulling
    :
    Frequently pulls and pushes freight up to 100 lbs. with or without equipment.
  • Reaches for freight at waist level and occasionally above shoulder height or below waist level; operates forklift controls, straps, airbags, and cardboard.
  • Loads, lifts, and handles objects up to 100 lbs. using OSHA guidelines; can use either hand or both hands.
  • Performs required cognitive tasks, including reading manifests and dots, inspecting forklift equipment, and making safety judgments.
  • Will work various times and shifts to meet customer schedules and in extreme hot or cold climates, potentially in noisy or odorous environments.
  • Attendance is a requirement.
Work Environment

Employees will be exposed to working with or around others while loading and unloading, operating vehicles and enclosed trailers, and operating in all weather conditions. Noise levels and lighting conditions can vary from quiet to loud and from bright to low light.

  • Working Days:
    Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
  • Shift: AM.
  • These days and shift are estimates and may change based on scheduling.
