Overview

Engineering Assistant I or II:
Pharr District (San Benito Area Office) – Job description and responsibilities for the Texas Department of Transportation position in Pharr District, San Benito, Texas. This role supports design, construction, and maintenance of roadways, with opportunities for hands-on experience, training, and collaboration with licensed engineers on transportation projects.

Responsibilities
  • Actively prepare for professional engineering licensing/registration through training and the completion/maintenance of required documentation.
  • Apply engineering principles, methods, and techniques to transportation-related activities.
  • Collect engineering data at project sites.
  • Perform construction inspection and material sampling/testing.
  • Perform engineering-related calculations, drafting and design work.
  • Perform engineering-related duties in transportation engineering.
  • Conduct traffic barricade inspections, identify problems, and assist with resolution of traffic control plans.
  • Review construction plans prepared by consultants.
  • Review engineering work for calculation errors and compliance with applicable laws, codes, and guidelines.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience

Education and Substitutions: Acceptable substitutions for all levels include Master’s or Doctoral degrees in engineering that are ABET-accredited as applicable, which may substitute for a Bachelor's degree.

Experience: Engineering Assistant I: no work experience required. Engineering Assistant II: 1 year of engineering-related experience (full-time or prorated part-time equivalent). No supervisory experience required.

Licenses and

Certifications:

Valid U.S. driver’s license (driving a state vehicle required). Engineering Assistant II requires Texas Engineer In Training certification.

Additional Notes: Applicants who already possess the required Bachelor's degree are eligible to apply. Applicants who are currently completing their degree may apply if they will graduate with a qualifying Bachelor's degree no later than August 2026. If selected, proof of degree must be provided by the start date.

Schedule, Location, and Travel

Location:

San Benito Area Engr/Maint Sec, 1350 East Highway 77, San Benito, 78586.

Schedule:

Full-time, 40 hours per week, Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. On-site with location flexibility. Travel:
Yes, up to 10% of the time.

Salary and Benefits

Salary: Engineering Assistant I (B20): $66,000–$81,351 annually; monthly equivalent $5,500–$6,779.25. Engineering Assistant II (B21): $69,600–$87,046 annually; monthly equivalent $5,800–$7,253.83.

Pay Basis: Yearly.
FLSA Status: Nonexempt.

Work Environment and Compliance

This position requires compliance with pre-employment physical and drug testing for safety-impact roles. All employees are expected to participate in the Engineering Assistant Career Development Program (EACDP), which includes signing a program agreement outlining responsibilities and service commitments. Non-compliance may lead to reclassification.
