Overview

Construction Inspector I or II:
Pharr District (SBAO) - 2601720

The San Benito Area Office in the Pharr District is seeking a Construction Inspector I or II to join our team in San Benito, Texas. You will inspect construction activities related to highways, roadway improvements, traffic systems, safety features, and other critical infrastructure within the district. The role offers training and opportunities for growth and advancement within TxDOT.

Important:
This position is a Safety Impact role and will be subject to drug testing. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the right to determine the level of position offered based on experience, skill level, and business needs.

Responsibilities
  • Inspect construction methods and workmanship to ensure compliance with plans and specifications for roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports, and related structures.
  • Coordinate inspections, answer questions from contractors, and attend pre-construction meetings as needed.
  • Calculate payments due to contractors for work completed; monitor project progress and provide reports on work status.
  • Consult with Project Engineers, resident project representatives, and contractors on progress and problems; review data on equipment utilization and time/cost estimates.
  • Ensure contractors comply with safety standards and approved traffic management or airport closure plans; inspect barricades and move traffic control devices as required.
  • Observe and document ongoing construction work and assist in engineering data collection and plan development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. For very large or complex projects, may serve as the lead inspector or oversee statewide inspection activities on ongoing projects.

Additional duties for Construction Inspector II include:

  • Resolve differences in interpretation of plans and specifications.
  • Train and mentor less experienced inspectors on work methods.
Minimum Qualifications Education

Construction Inspector I or II: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience

Construction Inspector I: No experience required.

Construction Inspector II: 1 year of construction, construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance and repairs, materials or process inspection; or transportation engineering support related experience. Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.

Licenses and Certifications

Valid US driver’s license; position requires driving a state vehicle.

  • Applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques
  • Applicable testing methods, processes and procedures
  • Applicable laws, rules, and regulations
  • Engineering principles, practices and methods relevant to job responsibilities
  • Reading and interpreting plans, schematics, blueprints, and maps
  • Basic algebra, trigonometry and geometry for calculations
  • Public relations and maintaining relationships with stakeholders
  • Computer proficiency with relevant programs and systems
  • Self-starting, initiative, and ability to work with minimal supervision
Physical Requirements
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Extreme temperatures, noise, and hazards; may require use of protective gear
  • Lift up to 50 lbs; frequent lifting up to 25 lbs; various movements including bending, crouching, kneeling, crawling, reaching, standing, walking
  • Vision and hearing requirements for inspection and safety tasks

This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.

Note:

The Department of Transportation’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40 – does not authorize medical marijuana as a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result in this position.

Travel:
Yes, up to 10% of the time

Shift: Day shift, Mon–Fri, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Onsite with some location flexibility as needed.
