JUVENILE SUPERVISION OFFICER - SUPERVISOR

Salary: $47,250.00 per year

Reports To: Operations Managers and Facility Administrator

Supervises: JSO and JSO/RPO Staff and Control Booth Operators

Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or GED is required. Some college education in related field and two (2) years experience in direct juvenile care is preferred. Prior military experience is preferred, but not required. Must provide a copy of the military DD214 form reflecting honorably discharged.

Licenses, Certificates, and Experience
  • Must be over twenty‑one (21) years of age (for state certification requirements)
  • Current Texas Driver's License and must have current automobile insurance
  • Ability to communicate effectively (reading, writing, and understanding) in English is required; bilingual is preferred
  • Able to submit to a drug urinalysis pre‑screening exam and pass a criminal background check. If the candidate for employment does have a criminal record, it must be cleared through the requirements as set forth by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department
After Hire Licenses or Certificates
  • Juvenile Supervision Officer Certification
  • Cardio‑Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification and First Aid (FA)
  • Handle with Care (HWC) State Approved Restraint Technique Certification
Typical Duties
  • Provide direct supervision of assigned floor staff, control booth operators (CBOs), residents of both ARAVC and LIFE Programs and manage the facilities
  • Enforce the ARAVC and LIFE Programs and ensure the security, safety and welfare of the residents
  • Enforce the policy and procedures for all operational aspects of the Programs
  • Record and report all maintenance discrepancies, shortfalls
  • Implement all program plans for visitation, telephone calls, housekeeping, fire safety, etc., to include the proper distribution of the uniform
  • Provide direct supervision of all residents’ daily activities and maintain safety and order of all residents
  • Maintain accountability of all residents and equipment and ensure that the environment is safe, clean, and secure
  • Knowledge of access to the Guardian RDIF website/program and use of Spartan hand‑held device
  • Monitor and ensure staff compliance while using the Spartan hand‑held device while conducting observation checks in the LIFE or Detention rooms
  • Monitor and ensure staff compliance while documenting paper observation logs when in the bays
  • Implement available treatment plans, corrective disciplinary strategies and effective treatment intervention programs. Ensure that residents are aware of and understand their responsibilities and appropriate behaviors
  • Facilitate cognitive skill groups and teamwork activities
  • Implement appropriate disciplinary sanctions and effective TBRI interventions
  • Observe and document resident’s behavior
  • Provide individual and crisis coping techniques
  • Monitor security and fire alarm systems, including closed circuit monitors
  • Transport residents to off‑site locations as required
  • Maintain communication with other staff to ensure continuity of care
  • Provide oversight and participate in committees and special projects
  • May assist in investigating incidents involving residents
  • May assist in interviewing applicants and selection recommendations for new hires
  • Use verbal de‑escalation techniques to maintain control of situations
  • Properly apply a physical restraint as instructed by Handle With Care, when a resident is physically harming themselves, others, serious property damage or attempting to escape
  • A supervisor should not engage in any form of romantic relationship with a subordinate employee that could potentially appear to create or promote favoritism or special treatment for the subordinate employee
  • Adhere, maintain and comply with professional conduct and ethical behavior consistent with the standards and policies and procedures expected by the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), TJJD, Cameron County, and Cameron County Juvenile Justice Department (CCJJD) at all times, both on duty and off duty
