JOB SUMMARY
Uses knowledge of English and Spanish to provide assistance to certificated staff in academic instruction and language proficiency assessment of students identified as English learners; and performs a variety of related services requiring English and Spanish.
SUPERVISIONReceives supervision from a manager at or above the level of Coordinator. Receives technical instructions from a teacher and/or other certificated staff member.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSDuties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Tutors students identified as English learners to improve their proficiency in English and their understanding of curriculum subjects.
- Assists assigned students with challenges related to school achievement as a result of language barriers.
- Promotes the well-being of students by helping them develop a positive attitude/self-image and ability to cooperate and interact with other students and adults.
- Performs a variety of tasks that support classroom instruction.
- Consults with teacher on ways to better meet students needs.
- Performs related tasks as required in program planning, implementation, and operation regarding assigned students.
- Serves as interpreter as needed.
- Translates correspondence to parents in English or Spanish.
- Administers oral language proficiency and academic tests in English and Spanish to students.
- Transcribes oral answers into written form using state-and District-approved tests.
- Contacts school staff and parents to explain meaning of test scores obtained.
- Tests students on a one-to-one basis.
- Verifies student cumulative record information.
- Posts, maintains, and updates testing data.
- May travel from one work location to another, using personal transportation.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
- Any combination of the following paid experience amounting to one year: providing instructional assistance interpreting or translating services in the English and Spanish language.
- High school graduation or the equivalent.
- Completion of at least 48 semester units (or 72 quarter units) at the college level, OR possession of an Associate's or higher level degree, OR pass assessment that demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to assist in teaching reading, writing, and mathematics readiness.
- An appropriate, valid California driver license.

ADDITIONAL SALARY INFORMATION:
This is a non-exempt position, Regular Classified Salary Range 34. Most positions in this class work 4-6 hours/9 months. The probationary period for employees in this classification is six (6) months (or 130 working days of paid service).

Pass/Fail. This requirement can be met by one of the following:
Completion of at least 48 semester units or (72 quarter units) at the college level, OR possession of an Associate’s or higher-level degree, OR pass the Assessment Examination.Only qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process.
Successful candidates who pass all parts of the examination process will be placed on the eligibility list in order of their relative merit.
Candidates will be notified in accordance with the Personnel Commission Rules.
This eligibility list will be active for a period of one year.
