Job Description & How to Apply Below
SBVC is a designated Hispanic and Black Serving Institution with a majority of our students identifying themselves as either Latinx or African American/Black. At the heart of the Inland Empire, SBVC is a driving factor to improve the lives of our students, their families, and our communities. We are seeking ten individuals to join our Counseling Department who are fully committed to transformational, culturally responsive education.
The San Bernardino Valley College (SBVC) Counseling and Matriculation Division invites qualified applicants to apply for multiple full time, tenure track Counselor positions in the following areas:
Adult Education, General Counseling, Honors/Transfer Center, Middle College, Next Up/Guardian Scholars, Taytayan, Umoja, and the Veterans Center. The Division seeks innovative faculty members who demonstrate a strong commitment to student success. This recruitment is anticipated to fill ten (10) full time, tenure track Counselor positions. Applicants who apply to this posting will be considered for placement in any of the program areas listed above.
Representative Duties:
The following duties are typical of those performed by faculty in this classification. Other duties may be assigned as appropriate.
The Counselor will perform all regularly assigned duties, including academic, career, and personal counseling, as well as follow-up services. Specific responsibilities include:
* Evaluating student transcripts.
* Assisting students with career decision-making.
* Providing in-person and online education planning, including the development of comprehensive student education plans.
* Offering transfer guidance and course selection assistance.
* Teaching Student Development courses.
* Serving as a liaison to instructional divisions.
* Presenting workshops.
* Conducting follow-up services for special populations, including students on academic notice or dismissal and nontraditional adult students.
* Additional duties include developing and implementing programs and services that support student access and retention, conducting student orientations and success workshops, and collaborating across campus to support student achievement.
* Counselors work in an environment that requires the highest level of integrity, confidentiality, ethical practice, innovation, collegiality, teamwork, and adaptability to San Bernardino Valley College's campus culture in support of student success.
Additional Support Areas (depending on area of assignment):
Adult
Education:
San Bernardino Valley College is seeking three CAEP Transition Counselors to support the California Adult Education Program pathway connecting K-12 adult education sites to postsecondary education and workforce opportunities. Transition Counselors provide individualized guidance to adult learners, assisting with education planning, career exploration, and completion of the full matriculation process. They identify and address barriers to enrollment and persistence by connecting students to campus and community resources while collaborating closely with adult schools and consortium partners.
This role advances seamless transitions, equitable access, and improved student outcomes within the Inland Adult Education Consortium.
Additional Representative Duties:
* Onsite work at adult education school sites.
Honors/Transfer Center:
The Honors Program is designed for our community's most ambitious and intellectually critical scholars seeking a deeper engagement in their college experience. Students in the San Bernardino Valley College Honors Program engage in enhanced experiences, faculty mentorships, and academic opportunities to earn an advantage in transferring to the four-year institution of their choice.
Though the Honors Program encourages all students wishing to take one of these courses to enroll in the Program, a student need not be in the Program to enroll in an Honors course. These courses have been IGETC-approved and are transferable to accredited 4-year colleges. These courses count toward completion of the SBVC Honors Program, and selected courses count for pre-major credit.
Middle College:
The Middle College High School Program supports and collaborates with the Middle College High School (MCHS) whose student population consists of 80% advanced achievement (GPA ranging from a minimum of 1.8 to a 3.49) and 20% high potential (GPA of 3.5 or higher). SBVC and MCHS work in collaboration to provide a professional and supportive environment that allows students to thrive.
