Department Of Chemistry And Biochemistry Teaching Associate Pool

The Department Chemistry and Biochemistry at California State University, San Bernardino is seeking part-time graduate student applications from a diverse group of qualified individuals for both our San Bernardino Campus (SBC) as well as our Palm Desert Campus (PDC). The department is seeking experienced, well-organized, and student-centered individuals to teach in any of our subject areas:
General Chemistry, Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry. Candidates in this position will be tasked with teaching labs or discussions which are foundational level courses while maintaining an active dialogue with the coordinator. Candidates should demonstrate their ability to interact and work effectively with a wide and culturally diverse range of students, including first-generation college students. Preference will be given to those with experience in working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive and inclusive environment.

Preference will also be given to those with relevant work experience and those who have professional capabilities.

Workload can be as little as one course up to a maximum of 15 WTU.

This is a pool of graduate students for the department to draw on as necessary and all appointments are temporary. Staffing decisions are made on a rolling basis typically beginning a few months prior to the start of an academic term right up to the beginning of the academic term. We recommend submitting your application at least 4 months before the beginning of an academic term to be considered for available positions.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Organic or Analytical Chemistry and have a command of the subject matter.

Typical activities include inspecting lab for safety and preparations issues, perform experiments indicated in lab manuals/textbooks, maintain student attendance, maintain regular communication with laboratory and recitation coordinator, maintain scheduled office hours outside of scheduled teaching times, meeting lab coordinator and lecture instructors' expectations for grading including: returning graded work promptly, record grades regularly in Canvas and turn in final lab grades by last day of final exams

Qualified candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population and to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students across a wide range of disciplines.

Minimum qualifications:

Candidates must be 'classified' students in a Master's Program in Chemistry or a related field and have one semester of graduate course work. Students may not be considered if they are in probationary status or have any outstanding incomplete grades. In case of teaching activities classes, candidate must have a strong command of the subject matter, course design/preparation, instructional material and organization.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Candidates must be 'classified' students in a Master's Program in Chemistry or a related field and have one semester of graduate course work. Evidence of scholarly activity, publication, and innovation is valued. Evidence of exemplary graduate-level teaching and leadership experience at program level is preferred and should be noted in application.

Special conditions:
The person holding this position is considered a'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
