Under direct supervision of the Associate Dean and under the lead work direction of the CSBS Intervention and Retention Specialist, Peer Mentor Student Assistants assist in peer-to-peer mentoring and student success support to undergraduate students in the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences. Peer Mentor Student Assistants assist students with navigating university life, including academic planning, understanding university programs, policies, and procedures, and connecting with appropriate campus resources.

Responsibilities:

Under direct supervision, duties include but not limited to, providing support to professional staff in:

  • Peer Support Drop-Ins:
    Meet with students to provide peer-to-peer support, basic academic guidance, and assistance navigating university programs and processes.
  • Resource Referrals:
    Connect students with appropriate college and campus resources, including tutoring, academic advising, counseling and psychological services, basic needs assistance, financial aid, and student organizations.
  • Training and Professional Development:
    Participate in required training sessions and team meetings to develop knowledge and skills related to peer mentoring, student support, campus resources, outreach, and student well-being.
  • Recordkeeping:
    Maintain accurate and timely records of student interactions and submit summary reports to support program tracking and follow-up.
  • Student Outreach and Engagement:
    Conduct outreach to students and participate in Student Success Center programs, events, and activities designed to promote student engagement, belonging, and academic success.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to learn and perform assigned work; follow oral instructions; work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and other students; communicate effectively with all levels; and read and write English at a level appropriate to the position.

    Qualification:

    Admission or registration as a CSU student.

Required Qualifications:

  • Maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. or greater per semester and cumulative.
  • Students must be enrolled in at least halftime units at CSUSB (6 units undergraduate; 3 units graduate)
  • International students must have full-time enrollment at CSUSB. (12 units undergraduate; 6 units graduate)
  • Eligible to work in the United States
  • Payroll Requirement:
    Social Security Card

Preferred Qualifications:

  • College of Social & Behavioral Sciences major
  • Undergraduate student with Junior or Senior standing
  • Availability to work at least 10 hours per week
  • Preferred minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Previous mentoring, tutoring, leadership, or customer service experience.

Compensation and Benefits:

Student Employment Anticipated Hiring Range: $16.90 per hour.

The compensation offered will consider internal equity and experience among other factors.

Monday through Friday (8:00 am - 5:00 pm).

Summer available hours:
Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm).
