Under direct supervision of the Director. Being a member of California State University, San Bernardino’s (CSUSB) Student Orientation Lead, Student Assistant position is an honor and a rewarding opportunity for your personal and professional growth. New Student Orientation and Family Programs select dedicated student leaders to assist the Orientation Leader team and assist in the planning and implementation of our First Year, Transfer, and Parent and Family Orientation programs.

Student Orientation Leads (SOLs) serve as student leaders, peer mentors and educators, CSUSB resource specialists, and role models to the entire Orientation Leader team. They are instrumental in the successful transition of our newly admitted first-year, transfer students and their families into the CSUSB community.

Student Orientation Leads work under the lead work direction of New Student Orientation and Family Programs staff, led by the Senior Program Coordinator for Orientation. As a SOL, you are responsible for reading and understanding the Student Orientation Lead position description and abiding by all terms specified.

Responsibilities
  • Orientation Program Planning, Implementation & Operations
  • Support the planning and delivery of mandatory First Year and Transfer Orientation programs and related transition activities, including summer and fall programming.
  • Support registration and check-in by preparing materials, organizing stations and participant flow, assigning Orientation Leaders to roles, and resolving registration or assignment concerns in real time.
  • Assist in coordinating setup, breakdown, signage, room readiness, A/V checks, supply movement, and other production/logistics needs; direct Production Crew members and adjust assignments as program needs change.
  • Serve as an on-site point of contact for students, families, guests, Orientation Leaders, and campus partners; provide accurate information, courteous service, and timely problem resolution.
  • Participate fully in all required orientation sessions, trainings, retreats, meetings, and related events.
  • Orientation Leader Training and Development
  • Assist professional staff with the design and facilitation of Orientation Leader training, including learning objectives, presentations, handouts, icebreakers, team-building activities, role practice, and resource education.
  • Assist in planning and support Orientation Leader retreat activities focused on leadership development, community-building, team expectations, and alignment with orientation goals.
  • Assist in coaching, feedback, and performance observations to Orientation Leaders; elevate significant concerns to professional staff.
  • Model and reinforce professionalism, inclusive leadership, customer service, punctuality, accountability, teamwork, and appropriate use of university information and resources.
  • Assist in facilitating team-development opportunities and informal check-ins that strengthen cohesion and professional growth.
  • Orientation Leader Recruitment & Selection
  • Support Orientation Leader recruitment to attract a diverse and dynamic applicant pool.
  • Support tabling strategies, promotional materials, outreach schedules, and track engagement and adjust approaches as needed.
  • Assist in designing Orientation Leader information sessions, prepare speaking notes and session guides, and communicate role expectations, benefits, and application requirements.
  • Develop and coordinate social media and other promotional outreach in alignment with recruitment milestones.
  • Participate in Orientation Leader Meet and Greets and support interviews, applicant evaluation, and selection activities as assigned.
  • New Student Outreach & Calling Campaign
  • Organize the New Student Calling Campaign to build early connections with incoming students and provide helpful pre-orientation information.
  • Create and maintain Orientation Leader caller schedules and SOL office-manager rotations; communicate expectations, reminders, and coverage needs.
  • Assist in developing caller training on scripts, call etiquette, frequently asked questions, FERPA guidance, data privacy, referrals, and responding to student concerns.
  • Track call outcomes, document follow-up needs, and coordinate supportive handoffs with campus partners such as advising, housing, and financial aid.
