Job Description

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking to hire a student assistant, in a learning capacity, under the close supervision of a licensed Senior Transportation Engineer. The student assistant will assist in transportation engineering. They will manage file and inventory tracking, prepare meeting minutes and contract documents, and develop preliminary engineering plans, maps, cross‑sections, and cost estimates using software such as AutoCAD or Micro Station.

The student assistant will also participate in field investigations, inspections for roadway appurtenances, ADA facility upgrades, and drainage rehabilitation or repair, bridging the gap between academic knowledge and practical engineering techniques.

Conditions of Employment

This is a part‑time, temporary, non‑benefited student position. Employment is contingent upon mutual consent and may be terminated by either party at any time. The position is limited to California residents only.

Prerequisites

Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (fall, spring, winter if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on Caltrans’ affiliation list.

Students must be enrolled in at least six‑semester units (or nine quarter units) for undergraduates and four‑semester units (or six quarter units) for graduate students.

Declared major(s) must match those listed in the job posting.

Work Schedule

Flexible workdays and hours, Monday‑Friday, between 8 AM–5 PM. The final schedule will be determined by the supervisor. Assistants generally work up to 24 hours per week during the academic year and up to 40 hours during breaks.

Compensation

$18.28 – $28.16 per hour.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
  • Complete each term’s minimum unit requirements for undergraduate and graduate classifications, with proof collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and experience with Micro Station or AutoCAD.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220, state agencies give preference to qualified applicants (up to 26 years of age) who have been a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist in design of roadway alignments, profile grades, geometrics, and drainage facilities, construction details, staging, and utilities, including engineering calculations.
  • Assist in basic engineering drafting, computations, database as‑built retrieval, entry and generation or checking of project item quantities and plan sheets.
  • Assist in reproducing and distributing project documents (memoranda, plans, reports), and maintain project files.
  • Assist in preparing meeting materials for project development and focus meetings; attend meetings, take notes, and help complete action items.
  • Assist in preliminary field investigations, including researching and retrieving project background data such as as‑built records.
Physical Requirements

Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand‑eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation.

Working Conditions

Work performed in an office or field environment; comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and uneven terrain. Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, or climbing may be required.
