Engineering Technician V

Department of Public Works

• Prepare landfill plans and maps.
• Prepare complex right‑of‑way maps, cross sections, contour maps, and exhibits for a variety of projects.
• Create preliminary plans and complex construction drawings using AutoCAD.
• Provide final plans, profiles, and cross sections for transportation and flood‑control facilities.
• Design minor structures or facilities using accepted state or county standard plans.
• Calculate vertical and horizontal alignments, hydrologic and hydraulic equations, earthwork and material quantities.
• Prepare construction cost estimates.
• Conduct field investigations.
• Prepare exhibits and As‑Built documentation.
• Make design modifications to standards under general supervision of a professional engineer to meet local conditions.
• Serve as project engineer on minor projects.
• Assist professional engineers in identifying practical problems.
• Write and review special provisions for contract specifications.
• Assist with research for customer‑service requests.
• Assist in drafting the Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan and Water Quality Management Plan.
• Coordinate utility work, including potholing and other research.
• Coordinate work with internal and external parties.
• Assist in the contract procurement process.

• Minimum of five (5) years full‑time technical civil engineering work experience.
• 15 semester (23 quarter) units of completed college coursework in civil engineering, engineering construction technology, or a closely related field.
• Applicants with less education may substitute one (1) year of additional qualifying experience for the required education.
• Applicants may substitute an additional 15 semester units of coursework or a successful completion of the Engineer‑in‑Training examination for one (1) year of required experience.
• College transcripts or list of completed coursework required with the application if a degree has not been conferred.
• Degree must be from an accredited institution; foreign degrees may require credential evaluation.
• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, engineering construction technology, or a closely related field is preferred.

• Applicant must pass a background check prior to appointment.
• Travel throughout the county is required; a county vehicle may be provided. Valid California Class C driver’s license and proof of automobile liability insurance required.
