The Job
The San Bernardino County Department of Public Works is seeking a skilled and motivated Supervising Engineer to lead a team of professional engineers and technical staff. Under direction, the Supervising Engineer oversees an engineering section within the Public Works Department, supervising staff and delivering complex projects related to flood control, highways, traffic, solid waste, fire hazard abatement, and other public works programs. This position ensures that engineering functions are carried out efficiently, accurately, and in compliance with applicable codes and standards.
Opportunities Available in Multiple Divisions
Transportation Design Division: Manages in-house and consultant design teams for capital improvement projects. Duties include consultant oversight, project delivery, construction support, reviewing external agency projects, and preparing bids, contracts, and Board items. Also responsible for maintaining design standards, quality control, and staff training.
Traffic Division:
Function as responsible charge for engineer level design of signing/striping, signals, traffic control plans, and other transportation projects; act as the lead for traffic investigations, providing guidance to technical staff as directed by the Supervising Engineer; perform plan checking, meetings/engagement with the public as it pertains to Traffic assignments, and general support of other Sections within Traffic.

Pre-Employment Process:
Incumbent must successfully complete a background check prior to appointment. Travel:
Travel to various sites throughout the County is required; a valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be provided at time of hire. Mileage reimbursement is available.
Physical:
This position includes the following demands: frequent sitting; occasional walking, standing, bending, and squatting; fine manipulation in both hands; continuously reach or work below the shoulder level; must frequently demonstrate near vision and occasionally demonstrate far vision; occasionally lift or carry ten (10) pounds or less; occasionally work near equipment and machinery on rough, uneven, rocky, or slippery surfaces; occasionally exposed to dust, gas, toxic materials, noise, and extremes in temperature and/or humidity;

Applicants must meet all components within one (1) of the following option requirements:
Option 1:
License:
Must hold current status as a registered Professional Civil Engineer (PE) with the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs.
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field.
Experience:
Three (3) years of professional experience working as a civil engineer or engineer in a closely related field.
Option 2:
License:
Must hold current status as a registered Professional Civil Engineer (PE) with the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs.
Education:
Forty-five semester (68 quarter) units in civil engineering or a closely related field. Candidates must provide a list of completed coursework.
Experience:
Four (4) years of professional experience working as a civil engineer or engineer in a closely related field.
