Under the general supervision of the Physician and direction of the Executive Director, the Nurse Practitioner provides a wide range of primary health care services within the Student Health Center (SHC) at the Palm Desert Campus. The incumbent works under the supervision of a physician using established standardized procedures and/or process protocols. The Nurse Practitioner collaborates with the SHC Executive Director and supervising Physician(s) to develop standardized procedures and/or process protocols and scope of practice for the position.

The incumbent provides assessment, diagnostic, preventive, and health maintenance services; conducts physical examinations; diagnoses, treats, and manages illnesses and injuries; orders and interprets tests; and counsels patients on preventive care. This position is primarily located at the Palm Desert campus and may occasionally work at the San Bernardino campus.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive physical exams and obtain detailed medical histories
  • Diagnose and treat common acute and chronic conditions, including reproductive health issues
  • Provide medication abortion services and counseling on STIs, contraception, and pregnancy
  • Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests and lab work
  • Offer psychosocial assessments and referrals as needed
  • Administer first aid, urgent care, and emergency support
  • Prescribe medications and educate patients on treatment plans and preventive care
  • Perform minor procedures (e.g., suturing, biopsies, wound care, immunizations)
  • Maintain accurate medical records and ensure continuity of care
  • Collaborate with physicians and healthcare professionals on complex cases
  • Adhere to university protocols for quality assurance and infection control
  • Stay current on best practices relevant to student health care
  • May be assigned to provide lead work direction to specified SHC support staff (organizing and planning work, training and orienting employees, scheduling support staff, assigning and reviewing work, and providing input to employee selection and performance evaluations)
  • Participate in departmental meetings; engage in professional development activities; complete all department and university required trainings; perform other related duties as assigned and support SHC operations
  • Be willing to support both San Bernardino and Palm Desert Campuses
Minimum Qualifications
  • Academic degree or certificate from an approved college or university-based Nurse Practitioner program or equivalent training and experience as outlined by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). Incumbents must be clinically competent in a medical specialty applicable to their position and possess sufficient experience to independently perform the duties of a Nurse Practitioner within that specialty.

    Certifications:

    Possess and maintain a valid California license as a Registered Nurse and a BRN certificate evidencing qualification to use the title of Nurse Practitioner, as required by the California Board of Registered Nursing. If delegated the authority to furnish medications, the incumbent must also possess and maintain a valid BRN Furnishing Certificate. If furnishing procedures include controlled substances, a valid DEA number and certificate is required.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of advanced nursing and primary care principles, methods, and procedures; thorough knowledge of medical theories, practices, and protocols relative to the scope of practice; knowledge of growth and development, pathophysiology, psychosocial assessment, pharmacology, nutrition, disease management, health maintenance, applicable state and federal laws, and regulations; and general knowledge of supervisory principles and practices if assigned lead work direction.
