Job Title
Correctional Lieutenant – 12‑month Limited Term, full‑time (may be extended).
ResponsibilitiesAs a line supervisor, the Correctional Lieutenant assigns duties to subordinate Correctional Sergeants, provides instructions and on‑the‑job training, maintains discipline, and conducts inspections to assure that Sergeants are alert and diligent in performing their duties. The lieutenant supervises the custodial functions during the movement of incarcerated persons to and from assignments, recreation, and meals; oversees the maintenance of proper physical and sanitary conditions;
and ensures the well‑being of incarcerated persons. Duties also include preparing post orders, inspecting incoming and outgoing vehicles, materials, and supplies for contraband, directing contraband inspections, and overseeing procedures in the admission and release of incarcerated persons. The lieutenant monitors period counts, reports infractions of rules and regulations, and recommends appropriate action for irregular or suspicious occurrences. Participation in the institution’s classification and disciplinary committees, issuing passes for visitors, and enforcing institutional rules with firmness, tact, and impartiality are also required.
The position demands quick thinking in emergencies, accurate analysis of situations, effective communication, record keeping, and report preparation.
