Job Summary
Performs skilled manual tasks in the installation and repair of playground equipment and fences; maintains black top areas involving spreading and patching asphalt; and may serve as a crew leader on special seasonal projects as assigned.
SupervisionPositions in this classification are supervised by a designated supervisor at the assigned work site. Positions in this classification exercise no supervision.
Responsibilities- Lays out areas to receive asphalt paving.
- Determines amount of materials such as headers, asphalt plant mix and fill material required for the job.
- Determines grade for drainage in accordance with adjoining paving, structures or drawings.
- Advises maintenance worker employees regarding the placement of materials and determines when asphalt is cool enough for finishing.
- Determines required amount of materials for asphalt surface sealing.
- Advises maintenance worker employees in surface preparation and operates power squeegee.
- Lays out fence installations, determines depth of holes, mixes concrete, levels equipment and assembles fencing, gates and bracing.
- Determines height of installation and width of gate openings.
- Lays out playground equipment for installation and installs and repairs playground equipment and fencing.
- Ties fencing fabric and ensures that installations are safe and proper.
- Repairs playground equipment, making certain that equipment is properly assembled and is safe for student use.
- Performs heavy manual labor.
- Operates a variety of power and hand tools in the performance of assigned tasks including compressors, jackhammers, blowers and core drilling machine.
- Drives medium-sized trucks.
- Operates a forklift.
- May instruct and coordinate the work of assigned staff on a project‑by‑project basis.
- Performs job related duties as assigned.
Three years of maintenance and/or construction experience involving heavy manual labor including one year of experience laying asphalt concrete and/or erecting/repairing chain link fencing.
High school graduation or the equivalent.
Licenses / Certificates / RegistrationsAn appropriate, valid California driver’s license which must be presented/available upon acceptance of offer of employment and maintained throughout employment in this position.

Pass/Fail - Only qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process.
- Successful candidates who pass all parts of the examination process will be placed on the eligibility list in order of their relative merit.
- Candidates will be notified in accordance with the Personnel Commission Rules.
- This eligibility list will be active for a period of (1) year.
