Department of Public Works — Construction Equipment Workers
The department is recruiting for Construction Equipment Workers who perform skilled tasks in the construction, repair and maintenance of roads, flood control channels and other public works facilities. This list may be used to fill positions throughout San Bernardino County. Candidates willing to work in the Mountain and Desert Yards are especially encouraged to apply and may receive the Remote Assignment Bonus.
Applicants should specify all yards where they are willing to work on the supplemental questionnaire to maximize opportunities.
Compensation and Bonuses:
- Recruitment Bonus:
Newly hired employees may be eligible to receive bonus payments up to $2,000 ($1,000 upon hire and $1,000 upon completion of 2,080 service hours). - Referral Bonus:
Current regular-position employees who refer a qualified candidate may be eligible to receive up to $750 per referral ($250 upon hire, $500 after new employee completes 2,080 hours). - Remote Assignment Bonus:
Newly hired employees may be eligible to receive up to $2,000 (breakdown: $500 upon hire, $500 upon completing 2,080 service hours, and $1,000 upon completing an additional 2,080 service hours). Eligible yards are noted in supplemental questions.

Conditions of Employment:
- License: Must have a valid Class B (or higher) Driver License with a tanker endorsement and no restrictions for air brakes and manual transmission at time of application. Some positions may require a valid California Class A Driver License with appropriate endorsements/restrictions. DOT mandates drug testing for all employees in jobs requiring a Class B or higher license. Incumbents must pass a medical examination and drug test.
Random drug testing applies; drug testing following accidents, promotions, or reasonable suspicion may occur. DMV requires work history for the past ten years at selection interview time. - Availability: In critical response situations, employees must be able to respond to their assigned road yards within 60 minutes for valley and desert yards and 45 minutes for mountain yards. A method of immediate communication is required. Employees are subject to 24-hour emergency callbacks.
- Physical: Incumbents frequently bend, stoop, kneel, work on rough/uneven terrain, and lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Exposure to dust, vapor, hazardous materials, noise and climate extremes is possible.
- Sponsorship: San Bernardino County cannot consider candidates who require visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future.
- Experience: Option 1:
Nine (9) months of experience as a Construction Equipment Worker Trainee for San Bernardino County. Option 2:
One (1) year of experience in construction, maintenance, repair, industrial, fabrication, performing general manual labor, or a closely related field.
