Position: FLOOR COVERING MECHANIC

Job Description

To perform skilled work involving the installation, repair and replacement of carpeting, tile, and other materials on floors and similar surfaces.

Supervision

Receives general supervision from the Carpentry and Related Trades Supervisor. May receive work instructions from lead carpenter. Exercises no supervision.

Examples of Duties
  • Estimates quantities of materials required to complete assigned jobs involving covering floors.
  • Load material for a given job into a truck.
  • Ensure all supplies and materials are available before beginning a project.
  • Disconnects and/or removes obstructions such as furniture.
  • Measures and cuts floor covering and foundation materials such as padding and building paper to fit projections and openings.
  • Lays foundation material for floors, if required, and finish materials such as asphalt tile, vinyl tile, rubber tile, linoleum, other types of sheet goods, carpet,
  • Lays out guidelines and executes designs.
  • Covers floor material if required, and applies base, reducer strips, and carpet strips.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of hand and power tools to perform assigned task.
  • Operates forklift.
  • Performs job related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Three years of increasingly responsible experience laying carpeting, resilient floor tile, and linoleum AND High school graduation or the equivalent.

Licenses, Certificates and Registrations

Possession of an appropriate, valid California driver's license at time of appointment to and during employment in a position in this class.

Additional Salary Information

This is a non-exempt position, Regular Classified Salary Range 41. Most positions in this class work 8hours/12months. The probationary period for employees in this classification is six (6) months (or 130 working days of paid service).

Examination

  • Only qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process.
  • Successful candidates who pass all parts of the examination process will be placed on the eligibility list in order of their relative merit.
  • Candidates will be notified in accordance with the Personnel Commission Rules.
  • This eligibility list will be active for a period of (1) year.

Fingerprinting, drug and tuberculosis testing is required of all successful candidates new to the district.

Driver’s License and Insurance Requirements

In compliance with California SB 1100, a valid California driver’s license and automobile insurance are required only for positions in the classification where driving is an essential job function.

School Police Officers Differential Compensation
  • POST Intermediate Certification: 6% to base pay
  • POST Advanced Certification: 8% to base pay
  • Associate degree: 5% to base pay
  • Bachelor degree: 7% to base pay
  • Master degree: 9% increase to base pay
