Position: FWS – STEM: CIS Peer Instructional Leader (SA)

Position Description

  • STEM Tutoring: Review and explain course content, assist with homework, provide guidance on assignments or assessments.
  • Embedded Tutoring: Support faculty in STEM courses by participating in class/lab activities, assisting students as needed, hosting Academic Excellence Workshops related to course exams.
  • Skill Development: Help students develop effective study habits, critical thinking, and independent problem‑solving strategies.
  • Administrative Tasks: Maintain regular communication with faculty, the STEM Center Program Services Coordinator (PSC), and Instructional Aide II (IA II). Promote STEM Center tutoring services through class announcements, board reminders, and electronic communication.
  • Training & Compliance: Participate in training sessions and adhere to privacy policies like FERPA. Behave professionally and respectfully at all times.

Hours: 20 Hours

Location: Building 7 – Room 7307

Department: CIS (STEM)

Requirements
  • Minimum

    Qualifications and Skills:

    • Current enrollment as an undergraduate student enrolled in at least 6 units through the SMCCD district.
    • Minimum grade of B in the subjects they intend to tutor.
    • Must be able to tutor one or a combination of the following courses: CIS 122, CIS 242, CIS 250, CIS 252, CIS 274. Ability to tutor additional subjects is favored.
    • Basic verbal and written skills for breaking down complex concepts.
    • Patience, empathy, adaptability, and the ability to foster a positive, inclusive learning environment.
  • Preferred

    Qualifications and Skills:

    • Prior tutoring or teaching experience, particularly with diverse or marginalized student populations.
    • Federal Work Study program participation is preferred.
