Position Description
A Peer Instructional Leader helps students grasp complex technical concepts, improve academic performance, and build confidence in subjects like mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and computer science. They typically work in one-on-one or small-group settings, offering both in-person and online support.
Job Responsibilities- STEM Tutoring:
Review and explain course content, assist with homework, and provide guidance on assignments or assessments. - Embedded Tutoring/Open Lab (as needed):
Support faculty in STEM courses by participating in class/lab activities, assisting students as needed, and hosting Academic Excellence Workshops (AEW) related to the courses’ exams. - Skill Development:
Help students develop effective study habits, critical thinking, and independent problem-solving strategies. - Administrative Tasks:
Maintain regular communication with the course’s faculty and the STEM Center Program Services Coordinator (PSC) and Instructional Aide II (IA II). Promote STEM Center tutoring services through class announcements, board reminders, and electronic communication. - Training & Compliance:
Participate in training sessions, and adhere to privacy policies like FERPA. Behave professionally and respectfully at all times.
Minimum Qualifications and Skills
- Current enrollment as an undergraduate student enrolled in at least 6 units through the SMCCD district.
- Subject Expertise: A minimum grade of B in the subjects they intend to tutor.
- Must be able to tutor: BIOL 240, BIOL 250, BIOL 260 or any combination of these classes. Ability to tutor additional subjects is favored.
- Communication:
Basic verbal and written skills for breaking down complex concepts. - Soft Skills:
Patience, empathy, adaptability, and the ability to foster a positive, inclusive learning environment.
- Prior tutoring or teaching experience, particularly with diverse or marginalized student populations.
- Federal Work Study:
Qualified to participate in a Federal Work Study Program.
