Technical writers plan, create, and maintain educational content as an integral part of the engineering or user experience. The content is often in the form of documentation, but may also be UI text, sample code, videos, or other educational material. Regardless of the content medium, technical writers are distinguished by their abilities to explain complex topics in a way that’s useful to their audience.
As a Technical Writer for the You Tube Developer Infrastructure team, you will be the bridge between complex engineering concepts and the people who use them. You will support infrastructure teams across You Tube, researching and creating documentation for the tools, frameworks, and platforms that power the world’s most popular video destination.
In this role, you’ll have the independence to lead. Partner with subject matter experts from You Tube infrastructure teams to document and teach complex technical information projects, working directly with subject matter experts to document core tech stacks and developer APIs for both internal and external engineering partners. You will be a strategic thinker ready to scale solutions and drive a documentation-first culture across You Tube.
Minimum Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 4 years of experience creating content for technical audiences, such as developer documentation, CS course materials, or IT playbooks.
- 2 years of experience collaborating with subject matter experts to document internal or external APIs and core infrastructure components.
- Master’s degree in writing, engineering, or scientific-related field.
- Track record of researching and writing effective documentation for engineers and internal audiences.
- Understanding of You Tube from both the viewer and creator perspectives.
- Ability to manage multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment.
- Partner with subject matter experts from You Tube infrastructure teams to document and teach complex technical information.
- Plan, create, and maintain educational resources (including documentation, sample code, or videos) that guide readers through developer journeys. Enhance documents written by engineers for clarity, coherence, and discoverability.
- Document internal and external APIs to ensure seamless integration and use.
- Identify opportunities to involve engineering teams in document maintenance and advocate for documentation best practices.
- Use and adapt AI tooling into your workflows and teach these best practices to your teams.
The US base salary range for this full‑time position is $115,000–$165,000 plus bonus, equity and benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job‑related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
