Job Description & How to Apply Below

We are a private family office based in La Jolla, California, managing the financial operations of a diverse portfolio of businesses. We are looking for a sharp, detail-oriented Staff Accountant who is eager to take ownership of the day-to-day accounting across multiple entities. This is a unique opportunity for a recent accounting graduate to gain broad, hands‑on experience in a fast‑paced, entrepreneurial environment—far beyond what a typical first job in public accounting offers.

You will report directly to the Principal and work closely with external CPAs and tax advisors. If you are someone who thrives on variety, takes initiative, and wants to build real expertise quickly, this role was designed for you.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Manage full-cycle accounting (AP, AR, GL, bank reconciliations, month-end close) for multiple operating entities under the family office umbrella.
  • Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for each business.
  • Process payroll or coordinate with payroll providers; ensure compliance with federal and California state requirements.
  • Maintain the general ledger, chart of accounts, and intercompany transactions across all entities.
  • Track and categorize business expenses, manage vendor payments, and handle 1099 reporting.
  • Reconcile bank and credit card accounts on a weekly/monthly basis and investigate discrepancies.
  • Prepare supporting schedules and work papers for external CPA firm during annual tax preparation and any audits.
  • Assist with budgeting, cash‑flow forecasting, and ad‑hoc financial analysis as requested by the Principal.
  • Ensure sales tax filings, business licenses, and other regulatory filings are completed on time.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline processes, automate workflows, and improve financial reporting accuracy.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field (recently completed or within the last 1–2 years).
  • Internship or part‑time work experience in an accounting, bookkeeping, or finance role.
  • Solid understanding of GAAP, double‑entry accounting, and accrual‑basis reporting.
  • Proficiency in Quick Books Online (QBO) or Quick Books Desktop; experience with multi‑entity setups is a strong plus.
  • Advanced Excel skills (VLOOKUP, pivot tables, data validation, basic macros).
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to accuracy and meeting deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational skills—ability to manage multiple sets of books simultaneously.
  • Professional communication skills; you will interact with vendors, external CPAs, and the Principal directly.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • CPA‑eligible or actively pursuing CPA licensure.
  • Exposure to multi‑entity or holding‑company accounting structures.
  • Experience with payroll platforms (Gusto, ADP, or similar).
  • Familiarity with bill‑pay tools (, BILL, Melio) or expense management platforms (Ramp, Brex).
  • Comfortable working in a small‑team environment where you wear multiple hats.
WHAT YOU’LL GAIN
  • Breadth of Experience: Work across multiple industries and entity types—real estate, services, investments—building a skillset that would take years to develop elsewhere.
  • Direct Mentorship: Report directly to the owner with hands‑on guidance, not buried in a team of 50 at a Big 4 firm.
  • Ownership & Autonomy: Own the books from day one. Your work directly impacts business decisions.
  • Growth Path: As the portfolio grows, so does your role—with a clear trajectory toward Controller or Director of Finance.
HOW TO APPLY

Please submit your resume along with a brief cover letter explaining why this role excites you and what relevant experience you bring. We value initiative—if you have a portfolio of projects, coursework, or examples of process improvements you’ve made, we’d love to see them.
