Pay Rate: $24-$25/hour

Duration: 4-Month Contract

Location: Hybrid – San Diego, CA (Up to 3 Days Onsite Per Week)

About the Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Tax Administrator to support a Payroll Tax team on a short-term contract assignment. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented professional with strong administrative skills, payroll tax knowledge, and the ability to confidently communicate with internal stakeholders and government agencies.

The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting payroll tax operations, conducting research, resolving tax-related inquiries, and assisting with account maintenance activities. This position requires a combination of strong organizational abilities, critical thinking skills, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.

Key Responsibilities
  • Research and investigate state payroll tax issues and inquiries.
  • Communicate with state and local tax agencies via phone, email, and online portals.
  • Assist with payroll tax account updates and maintenance activities.
  • Process account changes, including business address updates, ownership changes, and account registrations.
  • Review and manage payroll tax account access with state agencies.
  • Prepare, organize, and maintain supporting documentation for tax-related activities.
  • Track and monitor outstanding tax matters and ensure timely follow-up.
  • Maintain electronic records and reporting systems for payroll tax accounts.
  • Support payroll tax compliance efforts by following established procedures and processes.
  • Escalate discrepancies, issues, or unresolved agency matters when appropriate.
  • Provide administrative and clerical support to the Payroll Tax team.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders while maintaining professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Assist with special projects and additional payroll tax initiatives as needed.
Required Qualifications
  • Intermediate-level professional experience in an administrative, payroll, tax, accounting, or related support role.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to interact confidently with stakeholders and external agencies.
  • Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently.
  • Critical thinking skills with the ability to identify solutions and follow processes effectively.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with payroll tax administration.
  • Experience with state payroll tax processes and compliance.
  • Previous experience working with tax agencies or government entities.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, or a related field.
  • Experience maintaining tax accounts and processing account updates.
