Position: Cashier (Accounting Technician I)

Position Summary

San Diego State University is seeking a customer-focused and detail-oriented Cashier (Accounting Technician I) to support the University Bursar's Office. This role processes and balances university payments, assists students and families with account questions, and provides accurate, friendly service across in-person and virtual channels.

Key Responsibilities
  • Cashiering & Customer Service
  • Collect, process, and balance payments for student fees, parking, housing, transcripts, graduation, and other university charges.
  • Process refunds and payments from students, companies, government agencies, campus auxiliaries, and other organizations.
  • Explain university fees, cashiering policies, billing, financial aid, registration, and related deadlines to students and families.
  • Provide customer service in person, by phone, and via Zoom while assisting with payment issues and online services.
  • Back Office & Operational Support
  • Perform back-office duties supporting operations, collections, communications, and third‑party payments.
  • Review Bursar’s Office documents and customer‑facing web content for accuracy and recommend updates as needed.

Position Information
  • Full-time, benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position.
  • Position is designated non‑exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
  • Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
  • The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.
Department Summary

The Division of Business and Financial Affairs (BFA) is at the heart of some of the larger projects on campus in recent years, including the construction of Snapdragon Stadium, as well as the implementation of my.

SDSU on campus. As part of BFA, the Department of Financial Operations is responsible for the financial and budgetary controls and procedures of the University and is directly responsible to the Vice President for Business and Financial Affairs. The Associate Vice President for Financial Operations has responsibility for Budget and Finance, Audit and Continuous Improvement, Shared Services, and the University Controller's Office, which includes the University' Bursar's Office, Accounting Services, Financial Reporting, and Financial Systems Management and Analysis.

The University Controller is responsible for the maintenance of the University's budgetary, receipt and disbursement (expenditure) general and subsidiary ledgers for all University Funds. Through the Accounting Services and Financial Reporting Departments, the University Controller oversees and coordinates the analysis, reconciliation and reporting of all financial transactions of the University, including cash receipt processing, student refunds, financial aid disbursements, billing/collections and reconciliations;

management of the diverse services provided by the SDSU  as performed by the SDSUCard Office. The University Controller is responsible for internal and external reporting including Legal/Budgetary Basis, Financial Information Record Management System (FIRMS) and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). The University Controller reports directly to the Associate Vice President for Financial Operations.

The University Bursar's Office is a customer service oriented group that interacts with students on a regular basis.
