The Office of Innovation & Commercialization (OIC) is establishing a campus-wide innovation platform to build a systemic and sustainable innovation culture, drive social and economic prosperity through the creation of a vibrant regional ecosystem, and accelerate the commercialization of UC San Diego inventions. OIC directly supports the UC San Diego strategic plan in its vision to be a student-centered, research-focused, service-oriented public university.
OIC strategy supports sustainable forms of economic development through collaboration with existing industry, and the creation of new high-potential startup companies. It will establish an integrated innovation platform that builds a dynamic entrepreneurial culture on campus and supports a vibrant regional ecosystem of people with diverse ideas working to develop new products, create jobs, and enrich the society we live in.
Its programs will increase the rate and number of university innovations that make it to the market/society and develop students who are capable of solving problems and leading and innovating in a diverse and interconnected world. OIC is responsible for a series of initiatives to drive innovation across all areas of campus and to speed university discoveries and technologies to the nation’s marketplaces.
OIC includes the Intellectual Property, Commercialization Agreements, Industry Partnering, Innovation Design, and Operations units that support this enterprise.

Responsibilities include performing a variety of professional and administrative duties in support of the day-to-day operations of the Intellectual Property Manager and licensing professionals; researching intellectual property reporting obligations in sponsored agreements; interacting with sponsor representatives and licensing officers to obtain information used to assess obligations and the type of compliance action; and providing recommendations for fulfillment of obligations for intellectual property rights to sponsors based on knowledge of the organization’s objectives and activities.
Duties require confidentiality, discretion, tact, diplomacy, and sound judgment. Work involves time-critical deadlines and maintaining highly confidential information within UCOP’s Patent Tracking System (PTS) and other databases. This role fulfills federal sponsor obligations related to patent activity, supports reporting obligations to sponsors, and participates in short- and long-range planning and development of office practices. Utilize search query tools and PTS to create reports related to sponsor compliance in IP management.
Serve as a contact for PIs regarding sponsor requirements and correspond with faculty, researchers, and department representatives to solicit input, provide updates, and resolve problems related to sponsorship. Satisfy IP reporting requirements of diverse sponsor groups.…
