Summary
At Balfour Beatty Construction in San Diego, we are seeking a Superintendent to work on various projects. The Superintendent is responsible for all field operations, including the coordination of subcontractors’ work, supervision of all field construction work by subcontractors and self‑performed work, and ultimate responsibility for implementation of the Safety/Zero Harm program for the job site. Shares responsibility with the project manager for developing the project budget, actively participating in the preconstruction phase, and ensuring that the project is built on time, within budget, and in accordance with company policies and procedures.
Manages and mentors assistant superintendents and other field personnel.

- Lead, oversee and educate owners, subcontractors, team members and community on the Zero Harm safety culture and its benefits.
- Perform project safety walks; lead in project safety meetings.
- Lead safety stand‑downs, toolbox talks, and related activities.
- Participate in incident investigations.
- Ensure safety is properly incorporated into job planning and project execution.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with new and existing clients, construction managers, architects/engineers, subcontractors, key stakeholders and community.
- Prepare operations‑related components of proposals and presentations.
- Lead construction delivery portions of presentations.
- Project financial responsibility to ensure a project is delivered with budget compliance.
- Assist in project cost projection and financial reporting (monthly, quarterly and yearly).
- Budget reviews. approve monthly owner and subcontractor pay applications.
- Communicate with project manager on potential extra charges and proper cost event tracking and notifications.
- Change order negotiations.
- Preconstruction assistance: estimates, constructability/value engineering, phase and site logistic plans, overall project schedule, GC and GR budgets, staff planning and scope writing, owner contract review, risk identification, participation in preconstruction meetings.
- Planning & scheduling: develop overall project plan, phasing, logistics milestones and schedule, perform schedule updates (prefer P6 experience), monthly updates, 3‑week look ahead, lead pull planning sessions, delay tracking and notifications, time impact analysis development, procurement tracking, identify and negotiate schedule roadblocks. Cost‑loaded schedule experience is a plus.
- Project administration, operations and close‑out: co‑lead with project manager, owner, architect, contractor (OAC) and key stakeholders, lead weekly subcontractor meetings, participate in monthly project reporting (MPR) preparation and discussions, communicate job needs/issues as necessary, lead project quality control program, assist in project punch‑list completion, obtain certificate of occupancy and government approvals.
- Build effective teams, foster positive culture, leadership and employee development; mentor, train and develop staff in all aspects of their careers, provide timely feedback and ensure participation in performance review process.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Ten years or more of commercial construction field experience on K‑12 and/or higher ED construction (either is acceptable).
- Five to 10 years of direct supervisory experience related to staff and subcontractor management.
- Proficiency using a personal computer (PC) and company communication tools, such as e‑mail, the internet, Procore, Bluebeam, Navisworks and Microsoft products (Word, Excel, Office, Outlook). Creating and maintaining schedules in P6 is a plus.
- Ability to read plans and specifications.
- OSHA 30 certification.
- DSA/Public Works experience.
- DBIA and CCM professional certifications (preferred but not required).
- CIESC certification (preferred but not required).
