Project Manager – Planning Policy and Design

Full‑time position based in San Diego.

We are seeking a Planning Policy and Design Project Manager to join our team of planners, urban designers, and engagement specialists in our San Diego office.

MIG supports a hybrid work‑from‑home/remote and in‑office schedule and encourages in‑person work for learning and team‑building opportunities. The ideal candidate will work from the office at least two to three days a week to help assign project work and mentor staff.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborative teammate: work as part of a cross‑office, cross‑discipline team that creates plans for neighborhoods, districts, and communities of all sizes throughout California and beyond.
  • Project management: lead teams to create bold, innovative, and equitable planning and urban design solutions via general plans, specific plans, and zoning regulations. Help build and maintain strong and responsive client relationships by developing leads, preparing proposals, and attending and leading interviews.
  • Project work: work with MIG Directors and Principals to provide overarching project direction to MIG staff and oversight of work products; manage internal and external sub‑consultant and client teams; develop and oversee scopes of work, budgets, and schedules. Produce high‑quality planning documents and other deliverables; maintain client relationships; identify the correct course of action to the client; represent clients at public hearings and meetings;

    and set the standards for excellence, responsiveness, and accountability.
  • Project types: citywide comprehensive plans, corridor plans, downtown plans, housing strategies, and parks and recreation system plans.

This is a full‑time, hourly position with eligibility for overtime pay. Some travel, evening, and weekend work may be required for community engagement, site evaluations, or to meet deadlines. MIG encourages a work‑life balance, and these excess hours can typically be offset during the week.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in planning, urban design, landscape architecture, public policy, geography, or a related field. A Master’s degree is a plus.
  • Relevant consulting experience working in planning or a closely related field. Must be able to produce written plan documents, planning strategies, and associated analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects, maintaining compliance with project contracts, drafting and managing scopes and budgets, and maintaining schedules, as well as working with clients and partners to execute project work and ensure completeness and quality control on deliverables.
  • Ability to prepare and deliver effective public presentations, lead working meetings, and speak easily and clearly in front of groups and facilitate client and stakeholder meetings.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated interest in the intersection of design, planning and equity; ability to develop collaborative, productive, and respectful relationships with community members, organizations, and partners. MIG values and respects lived experience of non‑dominant groups.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including graphics and document presentation. Software proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, ArcGIS/Arc Pro, and Adobe InDesign is required. Experience in Adobe Creative Suite and/or Sketch Up is a plus.
  • Ability to actively participate in or lead marketing and business development opportunities, develop proposals for prospective projects, participate in interviews, and maintain potential client and partner relationships.
  • Ability to develop collaborative, productive, and respectful relationships with community members, organizations, and partners. Bilingual in Spanish is a plus.
