Assistant Project Manager (Willing to Travel)

San Diego, CA Full-Time On-Site $70,000 - $95,000 /yr

If you are an Assistant Project Manager (APM) with Construction experience please read on. We perform general construction, design-build, and historic preservation services nationwide. Our projects range from office buildings and military facilities to historic monuments and Fortune campuses. This role does require 33% travel to job sites.

Position Overview

We are seeking an Assistant Project Manager (APM) to support delivery of construction projects across commercial, federal, military, historic, and public works markets. The APM will assist the Project Manager with planning, scheduling, cost control, compliance, and coordination of subcontractors and design teams to ensure safe, on-time, on-budget project completion while maintaining high quality and contract compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Project Manager in development and maintenance of project schedules, budgets, and forecasts.
  • Monitor project performance, prepare progress reports, track costs and change orders, and escalate issues as needed.
  • Coordinate day-to-day construction activities with subcontractors, design professionals, owners, and regulatory authorities.
  • Prepare and maintain project documentation including RFIs, submittals, meeting minutes, daily logs, and field reports.
  • Support procurement and subcontract administration, review invoices, process pay applications, and help manage change order negotiations.
  • Conduct regular site visits and inspections to observe work progress, quality, and safety compliance; document findings and follow up on corrective actions.
  • Ensure projects meet contract requirements, permit conditions, and applicable codes and regulations; assist with federal contract compliance where applicable.
  • Support project closeout activities, including punch lists, as-built drawings, warranties, and operation & maintenance manuals.
  • Help implement and enforce QA/QC and safety programs on site and participate in safety meetings and inspections.
  • Contribute to claims preparation, dispute resolution support, and lessons learned for continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • Required:

    Minimum 3 years of progressive experience in Construction with hands-on site and office experience supporting construction management activities.
  • Required:

    Strong understanding of construction means and methods, scheduling, cost control, and contract administration.
  • Required:

    Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong organization and time-management, and proficiency with construction management software (e.g., Procore, Primavera P6, MS Project, or similar) and Microsoft Office.
  • Preferred:
    Experience in the role of APM or Assistant Project Manager on medium to large-scale commercial, public works, military, historic preservation, or federal projects.
  • Preferred:
    Experience working under Federal contracts and familiarity with Government contracting (USACE experience desirable), federal regulations, and compliance requirements.
  • Preferred:
    Knowledge of USACE procedures, FAR/DFARS basics, and experience with federal subcontracting and reporting requirements.
  • Preferred:
    Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or related field OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Preferred:
    Certifications such as PMP, CCM, DBIA, OSHA 30, or equivalent are a plus.
