Description This half-time benefit-eligible Dental Hygienist will be an active team member in the Community Based Oral Health Program, assisting in program development, community assessment, implementation and program evaluation. The incumbent may occasionally be asked to perform hygienist duties at dental clinic sites.

Description This half-time benefit-eligible Dental Hygienist will be an active team member in the Community Based Oral Health Program, assisting in program development, community assessment, implementation and program evaluation. The incumbent may occasionally be asked to perform hygienist duties at dental clinic sites.

• Perform root planning and soft tissue curettage.
• Give injections of a local anesthetic.
• Use ultrasonic scaler.
• Perform patient education for expectant mothers.
• Work with diverse adult populations.

• Assist in planning and conducting preventative health programs.
• Conduct in-service workshops for community groups.
• Apply dental sealants and other topical preventive agents in clinical and community-based settings.
• Maintain statistics and records of oral health status of targeted groups.
• Develop oral health education programs.
• Perform other clinical duties as allowed by the Washington State Dental Practice Act, RCW 18.32.

• Completion of at least a two-year accredited dental hygiene program.
• Washington State Dental Hygiene license.
• Working knowledge of methods and techniques used in dental hygiene.
• Working knowledge of preventive dentistry and soft tissue management.
• Working knowledge of the terminology, materials, equipment and instruments used in dentistry.
• Working knowledge of dental radiographic techniques, principles and equipment.
• Functional knowledge of the Washington State Dental Practice Act regarding duties that may be performed by dental hygienists.
• Skill in performing basic dental hygiene tasks.
• Knowledge of Seattle/King County Department of Public Health principles and practices in community oral health care settings.
• Effective communication skills (oral and written).
• Demonstrated ability to establish working relationships in a team setting involving oral health care providers, staff, clients, parents, school officials and community leaders.
• Skill in learning and accurately providing information on oral hygiene and maintenance of oral health.
• Ability to learn and apply principles of early childhood education.
• Skill in conducting preventive oral health programs.
• Skill in making presentations to professional and community groups on topics related to preventive oral health techniques and programs.
• Skill in working with diverse populations, ages and cultures.
• Demonstrated ability to travel in a timely manner to multiple sites not well served by public transportation.

• Public Health relies on office automation (Microsoft Office) and web-based enabled tools, therefore candidates must be proficient and comfortable with computer use to perform functions associated with on-going work.
