Project Manager (Design & Facilities)
Location: San Diego, CA
Industry: Higher-Education / K-14 and Construction
Area of Specialty: Project Management / Design Management / Facilities Planning and Construction
Are you ready to lead the design and evolution of San Diego’s learning environments? We are not just building classrooms; we are designing the future of education. We need a Senior Project Manager who thrives in the "Early Lifecycle"—someone who understands that a successful school starts long before the first shovel hits the ground.
You are the visionary who bridges the gap between a blueprint and a functioning school. We need a leader with extensive design experience to oversee our architects, manage high-stakes stakeholders, and ensure that our "Aboriginal Spaces"—the heart of our classrooms and administration hubs—are both architecturally stunning and operationally perfect.
What You'll Bring- 7-10 years of experience in architecture or design management, with a strong emphasis on the Early Lifecycle of projects. You speak the language of architects and know exactly how to hold design teams accountable.
- Deep understanding of the Division of the State Architect (DSA) approval process and California public school construction requirements; and a proven track record of getting designs through the DSA and working effectively with local municipalities.
- Extensive experience in the Early Lifecycle of capital projects, specifically Schematic Design and Design Development.
- You have a portfolio that demonstrates your involvement in the design of "aboriginal" educational spaces—classrooms and administrative offices that prioritize both form and function.
- Experience managing public-sector projects funded by Bond Programs (Measures S, Z, U) is a massive plus.
- Certification as a Project Management Professional (PMP).
- Professional Engineer (PE) License.
- You will lead the Schematic Design phase and provide rigorous oversight of external architects. You aren't just checking boxes; you are ensuring that the design teams are delivering high-quality, innovative, and functional results on time.
- You will be deeply involved in the Architectural and Operational design of learning spaces. From the flow of a modern classroom to the efficiency of an administrative wing, you ensure every square foot serves the students and staff.
- You are the primary liaison between the District and the world. You’ll navigate the needs of District’s staff, negotiate with municipalities, and ensure 100% compliance with DSA (Division of the State Architect) requirements.
- You own the project from the first sketch. You manage the transition from conceptual vision to construction-ready documents, ensuring that the original design intent survives the realities of the budget and schedule.
