Position Description

The Division of Cardiology in the Department of Pediatrics at UC San Diego and Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego is seeking a Medical Director of Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation. The University of California, San Diego (http://) is committed to academic excellence among its faculty, staff, and student body.

Rady Children’s Hospital has been recognized as one of the top 10 best children’s hospitals in the U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll for two consecutive years, with Cardiology and Heart Surgery ranked #3 among pediatric specialties. It is the largest children’s hospital on the West Coast. The Heart Institute at Rady Children’s Hospital is comprised of 25 cardiologists, 8 cardiac intensivists, and 3 pediatric cardiovascular surgeons, and includes a robust infrastructure for research, quality improvement, teaching, and program development.

The Heart Failure/Transplant Program at Rady Children’s Hospital serves a wide variety of patients, including those with complex congenital heart disease and cardiomyopathies. The program is staffed by three UNOS-certified pediatric cardiologists, three nurse practitioners and a nurse coordinator, and three pediatric heart surgeons. The program has expertise in mechanical circulatory support, including temporary and durable VADs, and provides both inpatient consultative services for the CTICU and Acute Cardiac Unit, as well as specialized outpatient heart failure and transplant clinics held multiple times a week.

The program has earned the Center of Excellence designation and collaborates closely with the adult cardiac transplant program at UC San Diego.

Reporting to the Division Chief of Cardiology and working closely with the Surgical Director, the Medical Director will lead the pediatric heart failure and transplant program to ensure high-quality patient care, safety, and outcomes. Responsibilities include overseeing inpatient and outpatient services, developing clinical protocols, collaborating with surgical and intensivist teams on mechanical circulatory support, and maintaining strong partnerships with the transplant team and the adult cardiac transplant program at UC San Diego.

The Director will also contribute to mentorship, teaching, education, and research in pediatric heart failure and transplantation and represent the program at institutional, regional, and national levels to promote growth and enhance its reputation.

The appropriate series and appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level will be based on the candidate’s background and experience.
